Puerto Rico during Holy Week

We will be visiting Puerto Rico for the first time the week before Easter. From what we have read or heard, this might not be the best time because of crowds and closings. We will be staying about 45 minutes out of San Juan (Laquillo) but could use some advice as to what to see when???? We will have a rental car. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I've been to Puerto Rico over Easter several times and I don't think there will be any significant issues regarding crowds. Good Friday is a very quiet day and night in Puerto Rico and many things are closed. Is there anything specific you want to see or do that you need advice on?

Thanks for your reply. A few things we want to see are the El Yunque rain forest, which is very close by where we will be staying, and, of course, touring Old San Juan as well as doing some snorkeling. Since we do have a car, we do want to tour most of the island. Are there areas that you feel we should avoid that week? We do leave very late Monday, the day after Easter.

Another more specific question - would Old San Juan be a good place to visit perhaps on Good Friday or that weekend because a lot of the working people will be at the beaches? Or, would a lot of "stuff" be closed and busy anyway? Thanks in advance for any info.

I can't be sure but I think there is a very good chance that most of the shops and some of the restaurants will be closed on Good Friday. That is a very important day in Puerto Rico and lots of businesses close. I guess though if you are more interested in just walking around the old town and seeing the fort, rather than going into shops or museums, then it would be okay.

Since you will have a car, seeing El Yunque on your own would probably be better than a tour. They have a lot of well marked trails. Or possibly hire a private guide.
