Planning a vacation for Feb. 2012
I'm looking for a spot that is on the beach, preferably a condo but amenities of a resort. Also nice sandy beach with calm waters that you could float around in. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

turks & caicos! grace bay beach is 12 miles of white white oh so soft sand that never getes hot to the touch. the reef cuts all the wave action so it's perfect for swimming & floating 8-)
most of provo's resorts are condo style - with resort amenities - directly on the beach, so if you will give us your hotel budget we can suggest which ones might work best for you.
provo has outstanding restaurants, diving, good snorkeling, practically no shopping & low key nightlife.

Just curious Virginia for future reference, is TCI warm enough in February for floating in the water (prolonged swimming, etc.)? I have a winter holiday (Mardi Gras) that can fall in February or even early March as it is not the same every year but I have always worried whether or not the water would be warm enough at that time. I would love to hear it is so I appreciate the reply! Thanks!

i've only been in late summer & fall - when the water is at it's warmest. it may well be too cool for prolonged swimming/snorkeling. water temps around 78 instead of 82 can make quite a difference (t&c used to be part of the bahamas which is normally considered too cool for prolonged swim/snorkel in winter & early spring).

i've stayed at shbr twice. it is not a new resort but is very well maintained. they rake the beach every night. all the units are owner decorated, so each is slightly different. we used 3 units on our 2 visits & each was well maintained with newer furniture & very comfortable beds.
go back to the web site & click on guest rooms & suites. on the right side of that page, in a small gray box it offers you "suite photos". not a lot of pics but a couple to give you an idea.

they really should have more pics on their site...

Carambola on St. Croix - 6 of the 26 buildings have full kitchens in the rooms (the others are being refurbished as hotel room only). February is iffy in terms of how calm the water will be (if the Christmas winds are up, it might be a little rough), but the resort is now a Marriot Renaissance and is right on the beach.

Virginia, while in St. Thomas did you ever feel safety was a problem? Would you suggest renting a car there? How was the food at the restaurant there? Did you eat out at other places? Are there lots of places to eat at? We are planning on being gone for two weeks is there enough to do there? Thanks for all your help.

OceanBreeze1 Yes I am interested in Aruba. I looked at the first Marriott resort but when I put in the dates there wasn't anything available. I haven't had time to do more searching. Do you own timeshares there?

No, we do not own TS's in Aruba. Howvere, we have rented from the sites I gave you. We stayed at Marriot Ocean Club a couple of times & really liked it. But a heads up for you: Do not stay on the Southwest corner of the south part of the building (the one closer to Surf Club). This is because of the beach bars that play extremely loud music. In February we were very excited about renting an oceanfront 2BR @ Ocean Club. We ended up in the south part of the "u"( The building is shaped like a U with the open part closer to the beach) on the southwest corner....OMG....the music was soooo loud. We could not sit out on our balcony, could not sleep. It was awful. And, because the resort was fully booked for the week there was no where to move us.
The time before we stayed in the north part of the U & it was fine.

Just wondering whether OceanBreeze1 encountered the same problems we had at the Marriotts during Feb vacation weeks. The pool and beach were a complete zoo. At times, we couldn't find anywhere to sit on the beach. The last two years, we've stayed at The Radisson, which has been a better experience because it has a much wider beach, so less crowded even in season.

Weadles,
We stayed at Marriott Ocean Club. We are "beach people" so cannot comment on the pool.
We never had a problem finding space on the beach. We always sat on the north end of the Ocean Club beach, just before where the Hotel section starts. Lots of chairs, lots of space.
Were you at the Marriott hotel or timeshares? (Ocean Club and Surf Club)
