Hi All,
I am planning a special romantic birthday weekend for husband's 40th. We have been to many islands in the Caribbean but are considering Nevis, Peter Island or Barbados, all of which we have never been to. Our favorite Carib. islands so far are St. Marteen(for the great beaches, great food and great people watching) and St. John (great beaches and great outdoor activities) though want to try something different. We love the beaches and the warm island people of the Caribbean. Beaches you can get almost anywhere. Warm island people - not everywhere unfortunately.
I am sort of leaning towards Nevis though worry that it may be too isolated. Barbados looks pretty nice. Peter Island Resort looks incredible too. Any thoughts?

The people on Nevis are absolutely lovely, and the island is not at all isolated (though it is decidedly less crowded that St. Maarten). I suspect that if St. John is one of your favorites, Nevis will fit the bill.
The only hesitation I would have about recommending it is that you are talking about a birthday weekend. Nevis is not easy to reach, even if American Airlines is running its SJU-NEV flight. You will need to connect, most likely, to St. Kitts (SKB) and then take a ferry over. Well worth the effort, but it could be a long day and consume too much time if you're only going for a weekend.
If you decide to go, Nisbet Plantation is worth your consideration. We stayed there late last year, and are trying to figure out how to get back. My trip report is on my webpage at: www.islandtime.homestead.com.
I agree that Nevis can be difficult to get to for a weekend only trip. If you do decide on Nevis regradless and are going soon, the Four Seasons rates may plunge. I've only been there in high season, so I'm not sure. We stayed in a suite and really enjoyed the roominess.
Barbados is also a great choice. We've been there twice and love the Hilton. The executive rooms have a wonderful view, a separate bedroom and liivng room, 2 bathrooms, and has an Executive Lounge. They serve a complimentary breakfast there, afternoon refreshments, and hors d'oeuvres along with an open bar in the evening. They also have an exclusive check-in and check-out area.
In response to Knowing's suggestion about the Four seasons Resort on Nevis, you should be aware that resort is closed until next November at the earliest.
I'm with the others, getting to Nevis is somewhat difficlut. American Eagle will suspend flights from SJU beginning next week with no hint when they will resume. If you are traveling from the US mainland your best bet is to fly non-stop into St. Kitts via MIA and then take the ferry over to Nevis.
If you are only going for a "weekend" consider going to an island you can reach non-stop from your nearest gateway city. Hopefully you'll be able to get an early morning flight so you can be at your destination by around noon and perhaps leave for home mid-afternoon. This will maximize your time "on island". Try to avoid taking connecting flights and or ferries to reach your destination as you'll spend more time traveling that relaxing at the resort.
If you tell us when you are planning to travel and where you are departing from it will make it easier for us to give you suggeations.
Remember, just because you might end up going to a bigger or more populated island doesn't mean you can't find a quiet romantic resort for that special weekend.
