I'm going to be on St. Kitts next week and anticipate having to be on the phone to the US on and off throughout my stay. My current cell phone provider is Verizon, which would charge $1.99 per minute for service. Are there prepaid cell phones (or landline service) available that would be less expensive? Any suggestions are welcome.

Do a google search for "St. Kitts cell phone rentals" and you'll find lots of links. For starters check out the following:

You can also purchase prepaid calling cards once you are on island from LIME (formerly Cable & Wireless).
When I was in Aruba last year I simply bought a phone card/calling card in Aruba & used the pay phones in the lobby.
You can probably do the same in St. Kitts. Calling from your room @ Marriott Ocean Club in Aruba was ridiculously expensive.
If you have to make multiple calls, then a phone card is the best choice. Renting a cell phone in St. Kitts is cost-effective only if you are making a lot of local calls. If you rent a cell phone to make international calls, then you are paying for your cell minutes PLUS the cost of the phone card. Seems a little silly to me.
