I stayed there in February 2001. It is a beautiful place. The grounds are amazing, w/ waterfalls, mineral springs, many gorgeous flowers, and peacocks walking around. I stayed in one of the suites, which had a large balcony overlooking the valley. From what I could see, the standard-size rooms were smaller/darker.

One downside -- a number of cruise ships stop at Dominica and on days when there is a ship in port Papilotte is over-run w/ busloads of cruise passengers who come to see the grounds and have lunch. You do not want to be anywhere near Papilotte [or Trafalgar Falls, or Emerald Pool] during the day when a cruise ship is in port [the crowds depart by late afternoon].

Trafalgar Falls is a short walk from Papilotte and you can go there on your own. To go to other hiking sites, you should contact Ken's Hinterland Adventures [they have excellent guides and an extensive website that you should check out].

If you go to Dominica, do try a whale-watching trip [we went w/ Dive Dominica, but there are other companies on the island that do whale watching trips].

If you are a diver, you will not be able to get from Papilotte to the dive operators on the coast w/o a rental car. We split our time in Dominica between a dive-oriented hotel on the coast and Papillote.

One frustration of staying at Papillote -- no in-room phones, just a single pay phone [heavily used] outside the reception area. This made it hard to schedule dives or hiking tours. Therefore, if you stay at Papilote you should try to make these arrangments in advance to the extent that you can.

Good luck.

This is probably too late for you, but I stayed there in February 2000. I hated it! I met 2 women who I went hiking with to Boiling Lake and they also hated it. My room was uncomfortable and i could hear every noise from the room above mine. Not to mention that the Peacock never shut up all night! (I'm a light sleeper to start with).

I had stayed at Zandoli Inn first and I think I was spoiled. Zandoli is beautiful with excellent hosts, beautiful views, great rum punch .

I did enjoy my time in Dominica however and would recommend it to anyone who isn't interested in a resort crowd.

We just got back from Dominica, and Papillote is wonderful. However, stay in one of the SUITES, not a room. It's $10 a night extra, but the SUITES are really nice, whereas the rooms are a little dark and closed in.
