Okay, what about Turks and Caicos?

My husband & I went in November. We absolutely loved it. Gorgeous beach, great restaurants & just plan relaxing. If you are looking for shopping or nightlife, this is not the place for you. We stayed at Ocean Club West & were very pleased with our 1 bedroom suite. If I were to go again (and I will someday), I believe I would pick The Sands for their location on the beach & restaurant...Hemingways. We enjoyed OCW & you really can't go wrong with any stretches of beach on Grace Bay. If you give me an idea of what you are looking for, I can offer my opinion on places to stay, day trips, restaurants etc...

Hi;
We just got back, and loved it! We have been to Aruba,St Thomas, and St John;
yet T&C is our favorite. No cruise ships,clear water, and no crowds. We
were there in late December, and the
weather was 80 degrees everyday. Just
like the previous post, we thought OCW
was the best.Hated the looks of Allegro, and Club Med. What are you looking for?You can email me with questions.

Hi!
Thanks for the info!
We are actually wanting to rent a villa rather than staying at a resort or hotel. Can anyone give me some hints on certain areas of the islands that are better i.e., safer, prettier, etc. than others. We went to Tortola last year, and were so fortunate that the villa we stayed in had the most perfect view, perfect beach, etc. I hope we can be so fortunate this time.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Amy

I have stayed both in the Turks and Caicos and they are magical. All but Provo in Caicos are pristine, undeveloped, no crowds, wonderful islanders, perfect for R & R with absolutely stunning water, beaches and diving. Provo has Grace Bay and is rapidly developing as tourist-central but it is still relatively quiet. Not much there other than the beaches and water either just more poeple and development.

Amy-
I'm not sure of any condos on Provo that are right on the water. Most of the resorts are condo type resorts with kichens, washer/dryer etc. This would include Ocean Club, Ocean Club West & The Sands. If you are looking to stay outside of Provo on one of the out islands, check out Parrot Cay, Windmill Plantation or Meridian Club. Don't know much about these, but may be a start.

If you want to go off the beaten path, there is more to the T&C than Provo (which has many charms, but they are becoming more well-known by the day). Last year, we spent a week on Grand Turk (having been to Provo twice before, as well exploring much of the Atlantic/Caribbean islands). Grand Turk shares some of Provo's geology (amazing snorkeling and diving, great beaches) but also has a lot of it's own history (the credible though un-proven claim that it was Columbus' first landfall in the New World, and a key role in the Space Race) and a real, honest-to-goodness (albeit tiny) town in Cockburn Town. The stingray trip to nearby Gibbs Cay is a must-do. In addition to enjoying the beauty of the island, we felt part of a real community. Grand Turk is NOT for everyone; it's definitely a sleepy little outpost, but it offers many rewards for the kind of traveler who likes to get off the well-trod path.
Amy:

I spent a week on North Caicos in the Prospect of Whitby Resort (or Club Vacanze). It is run by Italians, and is very very realxing. I read on a few of these boards that some American tourists didn't like it because it was an Italian resort, but I found everyone super nice and friendly and very interested in our culture. There is nothing else to do on the island, so if you're looking for R&R, this is my suggestion.
If you're interested, I'd be happy to answer more questions.

I just returned from a weeks stay in T&C. Stayed on Provo with a day trip to Grand Turk. Provo was wonderful for beach activities and restaurants. Limited shops, and no nightlife expect at the all-inclusive resorts, but that's not why we went to T&C.

The snorkeling was the best I've experienced (compared to St. Thomas, Grand Cayman). I also enjoyed the fact that it is not as developed as other islands.

My only complaint is the Provo airport for a Saturday departure. This was a disaster ... poor organization, only one security screener for several flights. Several people on our USAir flight missed the plane as a result. It was so bad, I would hesitate to return to T&C because of it ... unless I could fly out a different day.

Any specific questions ... reply here or send an email.
Amy,

I have been searching for a villa myself, if you enter Providencials and vacation home or villa in a search engine you will come up with homes that link you to rental companies of homes. I have not stayed there, nor talked with folks, so no personal recommnedation--just a way to search.

Nlou

My husband and I have been to Provo four times and we adore it! We got married there with friends and family and would recommend the island to anyone who wants a relatively secluded and romantic beach with great dining options. If you are looking for a hopping nightlife, this is not the place for you. But the beauty of the water and beaches is unsurpassed in any of the other caribbean islands. We have been to other islands but we keep coming back! We are in our late twenties and we find that although Provo does not have the same nightlife as other islands, the beauty of the beaches, clarity of the water, and snorkeling and diving are uncomparable elsewhere, making Turks our top choice. This is not to say there is no nightlife - it is just more laid back and relaxing. I highly recommend Coral Gardens for a romantic couples getaway. The condos are really spacious and you cannot beat the location - right in front of the Princess Alexandria underwater park which means that you need only walk out three feet in the water to snorkel on the reef. This was perfect for my husband and I since we like to snorkel but also like to lay on the beach - this was a perfect combo for us! I researched many places on the island for our wedding so if you are looking for something more or less expensive, email me and I will be happy to send over my finds!
