I am planning a honeymoon for the week of October 15th but I realized I'm somewhat limited in choosing a caribbean destination because of hurricane season. I believe Aruba is out of the hurricane "belt". Any other suggestions?

I heard someone mention ABC, Aruba, Barbados and I think Curacau ( sp.) . I'm not 100% sure of the 3 islands but Thats what I think they are. We are going away Oct 2002 to Grand Cayman. You cant worry so much they haven't had a hurricane since 1988.

Beth, the ABC islands are Aruba Bonaire
& Curacao. We went to Curacao for our honeymoon & loved it. We had the same situation with our honeymoon & actually picked Curacao because our original choice was the British Virgin Islands & our hotel cancelled on us 1 1/2 days b4 the wedding.

We went to Cayman last Oct. It was perfect. Never saw rain or a storm of anykind. Check out www.turtlenestinn.com. That was where we stayed and loved it.

Grenada, St. Lucia and Barbados would also be somewhat safer choices at that time of year, although not as safe as the ABC islands. We're actually going to the Virgin Islands the same week as your honeymoon. Last year we took a cruise to the Western Caribbean in late September and had no problems. There's definitely a risk, but even in the peak of hurricane season the odds of picking exactly the right week and exactly the right location to end up in a storm's direct path are pretty low. You should get traveler's insurance no matter where you go.

It would probably be in your best interests to watch the weather. Alto peak is end of Sept/early October, weather events do happen. But even if there is a 'cane in the Caribb, it may not decide to visit where you are and may die out before it even gets to you! No place is immune unfortunately, even Aruba, and no place can guarantee perfect weather. That's why they have trip insurance and if you have invested a lot of money in your trip, it can be a good thing! Airline tickets, if airlines are not flying (and remember you are probably going thru SJU) are changable and deposits can be refundable if the resort shuts down but there's a whole lot of "grey" area there! October is a glorious time tho and we have not had to cancel once our many trips in October! Who woulda thought flights in SJU were cancelled yesterday and in/out of other airports due to volcanic dust?

Scott - I was in Cayman October, 1999. The hurricane (don't remember name) came within 200 miles. Not a pretty sight. Flooding, roads closed, and property damage, rain, rough seas. Went the following October to perfect weather.

We were in st lucia last october 21-28 and had great weather. About 10 min of absolute downpour with rain twice a day and the rest of the time warm and sunny with some cloud cover. Even when it did rain, it was still warm and you definitly did not need a sweater or jacket.

Mary,the hotel that cancelled our reservations 1 1/2 days before the wedding was Frenchman's Cay on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.

To be fair to Frenchman's Cay and the other resorts that cancelled, the weather forcasters had predicted a major hurricane would barrel down on them within several days. To ensure everyone's safety and rather than waiting to see if the planes would even fly (and they didn't for awhile), resorts stopped accepting new guests so they could make plans elsewhere and evacauted those there if they could get off island. Due to the limited flights between PR and EIS this is a logistical problem that is not unique to the BVI's. And being there during a major hurricane which was predicted is not fun in any meaning of the word to say nothing about not having water, power, phones while awaiting the resumption of flights.
