Nov visit to turks
My sister and I would like to go to Turks and Caicos but don't know where the best place to stay is. I am looking for something in the middle to high end as far as pricing and has some sort of social activity. (it doesn't have to be anything crazy). Any suggestions???? Oh by the way we are late 30s early 40s.

My husband and I have been to TCI several times in the last two years. Be warned that nightlife is NOT the reason to go. That's not to say that there is no nightlife, but unless you're staying at Beaches or Club Med, the options for dancing, clubbing, etc. are pretty slim. That said, it's the most gorgeous place we've ever been -- so much so that we're looking into opening a business there. For first-timers, I'd recommend you stay on Providenciales (aka Provo). We stayed at the Sibonne, which is a lovely boutique hotel right on the beach. The pool is small but relaxing (although with Grace Bay right there, you won't want to stay in the pool). The restaurant there is first-class and you can go to dinner barefoot if you like. It's a relaxed, low-key and very gracious property, with other resorts and hotels within walking distance on the beach, so you can get social activity without staying at the big properties. You'll need to rent a car if you don't want to go broke using taxis to get around. Also, if you are adventurous, go to Smokey's on the Beach (any local can tell you how to get there). The local food is fabulous, the scenery is gorgeous, and there's a good chance you'll meet someone local and have a great conversation. Make sure you go snorkeling along the snorkel trail, and if you have a chance to go on a cave tour on Middle Caicos (highly recommended), contact Cardinal Arthur -- he's the most knowledgeable guide around and a real sweetheart. Also, sea kayaking and a tour of the iguana cay and conch farm are fun. One last thing, if you go in September / October, make sure you bring strong insect repellent. The mosquitos (or moseys) can be fierce at dawn and dusk! Have fun!

Interesting previous comment that you'll spend a fortune on taxis if you don't rent a car: the cheapest car rental is about $250 a week, including all fees, but not gas. It's hard to spend more than $37 a day on taxis each and every day (you can be sure that some days you won't leave the hotel area.) I have to admit I had felt the same way--- why does it seem easier to spend about $250 a week in one chunk, than $10-15 for a taxi ride? At the Sands there is a "resort taxi" that will take you to local restaurants for $5 (pp) in the Grace Bay area and $8 further out--- and $8 to the IGA. All these charges are round trip.

I used to live in Providenciales and I can say from past experience that the best place to stay is The Sands. The rooms are very large and they have a great restaurant called Hemingways, which is right on the beach.
If you are looking for a great vacation and to literally do nothing other than eat, walk the beautiful beaches and snorkell you will have a blast, but if you are looking for good bars and pubs and a happening nightlife this is not the place!
Enjoy!

As much as we love the Turks and Caicos, I must warn you that November is not a good month there. We were very disappointed last year to have rain and lots of wind. We were told by the locals that November is often that way. Just a thought...

When in November did you travel to T&C. This is the first I've heard of lots of rain and wind in November. So many resorts are booked? I know last year the weather was unusual (ie, a snowstorm in early December in the northeast usually doesn't happen...) Maybe this had an affect in other places...
