Night temps in St John in May

My family and I are going to St John this weekend and are deciding what clothing to pack. What is the approximate temperature in the evening in May? I'm debating whether to bring a few long sleeve button-ups to wear out on our deck in the evening. We're staying up near Bordeaux Mt if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

We've spent several week on STJ in May and I pack less and less each time we go. Temps will likely be in the high 70's or warmer at night and in the 80's during the day.

It's pretty much always been too hot even for capri pants for me there. I generally am in shorts or a casual denim skirt.

I would just bring one lightweight longsleeve shirt. it could be useful if you're in a windy spot, and also as a cover up if you start to get too much sun.

STJ is way more about comfort than it is about Fashion.

I agree at 8 PM it will be 75-77 degrees and could be a bit humid and be careful of the mosquitos all around if it is too humid or rained within a few hours before you are our.

I'm not sure if you read any other message boards, but the biggest thing going on right now on STJ is a very bad mosquito infestation. There were some torrential rains that precipitated it. Apparently it was worse than many local have ever seen but is beginning to improve. You may want to bring some long sleeves just for that in the evenings. Be sure to bring plenty of bug spray, mosquito coils, etc. Have fun. We are going June 2nd. Hope those skeeters go away!

Thanks everyone! I guess temperature wise we will not need long sleeves, but brenandg is right about the skeeters. I'm actually a bit worried because we'll have our 3 year old with us. Orvis carries a line of clothing called Buzz off, so I bought several items for the family, including a long sleeve button-up.

I would suggest bringing long sleeve Indian gauze type shirts if you must, but really, it will be plenty warm. Also, you need to make sure you bring plenty of bug spray with you. I suggest the pump version of Deep Woods Off. I have a 4 year old who has been going to STJ since she was 6 months, and I am very careful re: sunscreen and bug spray because she has fair and very bug sensitive skin. I spray into my hand and away from her, rub it onto her clothes and shoes, pat lightly on her legs and arms, being careful to stay away from any membranes i.e. mouth, nose, eyes, and pat down her hair. If you want to sit outside, they sell terrific mosquito "coils" in the hardware store and markets there which you light like incense and are pretty effective in cutting down on bugs. Make sure the villa is well-screened and hopefully there are mosquito nets. We also use oscillating fans on our porch. It just blows those suckers away.

We just returned from St John and it was quite warm and humid even at night (we are from NC so we are use to the humidity and the heat). The mosquitoes are very bad in general especially at night and on the trails. We packed a few long sleeve shirts but never wore them . It was just too hot and humid (although I was wishing I had a long sleeve T-shirt and pants on when we hiked the Reef Bay trail... the mosquitoes were very bad) I would bring plenty of bug spray to use during the day/night and Centrinella candles or something of the like for the deck at night. We stay at the Perelandra Villa which I would highly recommend but did not use the deck as often due to the mosquitoes.

We had a great time... a few little bugs cannot ruin the beauty of St John!

Have a wonderful trip.

I am from NC also...small world.I live 30 minutes South of Raleigh.I grew up in Raleigh.

kcap,

You will love St John..I found the noseeums to be the worst of the bugs to bother me and that was at dusk (this was in Sept.05).

Have fun!!!

Christie,

Hey good to hear from someone else on the list that is from NC!

We live in Durham and I work in RTP. It is a small world. There were a few people that were from the Raleigh area when we were on St John last week as well.

I am originally from Winston-Salem... lived in Michigan for a few years post graduation and moved back to NC. NC is a wonderful place to live!

Molly

PS... Hard getting back into the swing of things this week!

Molly,

We met a few people who now live in St John who are from Raleigh. At the Beach Bar a guy who works there went to school with my brother.Another girl who worked at the Balcony is from Asheville.
My husband works in Durham.
I guess NC is a great place to live...everybody is moving here!

Christie,

"We met a few people who now live in St John who are from Raleigh. At the Beach Bar a guy who works there went to school with my brother.Another girl who worked at the Balcony is from Asheville."

The owners of the boat (the Phaedrus) that we took a Sunset Sail on just purchased some property near Asheville. They plan on moving up here in a couple years. Seems NC is very appealing to many and St John as well.

"My husband works in Durham."

Durham gets a bad rap but we love it.

"I guess NC is a great place to live...everybody is moving here!"

Recently, Raleigh/Cary was listed #3 for a large area/city for a family to move and Durham was rated #3 for a small area/city for a family to move. We certainly don't need more growth but the rating is nice!
