Nicest beach in St.Kitts & Nevis
I will be arriving in Basseterre on Saturday March 5th 2011. We would like to go to a nice beach for the day. It should be easy to get to from the cruise ship and also have beach chairs. Thanks for the help

Most of the beaches on St. Kitts will be busy with your fellow cruise ship passengers. I would go to Shipwreck Bar at South Friar's Beach or to Cockleshell Beach. At the latter go to Lion's beach bar and Spice Mill. They are at the opposite end from the Reggae Beach Bar, which will probably be quite crowded with other passengers.
There are plenty of taxis waiting outside the port area and the driver will come back to pick you up at the beach at whatever time you tell him/her. I'm not sure what the current fares are, but if you go with a few people, it will be cheaper.
IF it's not a beach day, do go to Brimstone Hill. It's a wonderful excursion and is a World Heritage Site. All the islands have beaches but Brimstone Hill is worth the trip, even if it is a beach day (www.brimstonehillfortress.org).
You could go to Nevis by ferry. It would take about 45 minutes. Then it would be a 20 minute taxi to Nisbet. Much closer to the port in Nevis is Pinney's beach which has a few beach bars all near one another and just down the beach from the newly re-opened Four Seasons. But check ferry times--you need to plan a day trip to Nevis more carefully so you don't miss your ship.

As nice as the beach at Nisbet is, I believe the beach chairs are for the use of hotel guests only.
As for St. Kitts, as cw noted, the only beaches with chairs to rent/use will be the ones where the other cruise ship passengers are. But if you are willing to rough it and sit on just a towel, Sandbank Bay (not far from Reggae Beach) is a stunner and largely empty. It was the nicest beach we saw on St. Kitts.

Nisbet is a nice beach but as already pointed out beach chairs there are only available resort guests.
Quite honestly, if arriving on St. Kitts on a cruise ship for just one day it doesn't make too much sense to go over to Nevis just for some beach time. You are better off visiting one of the St. Kitts' beaches mentioned in earlier responses.

If you want access to lots of facilities, you can get a day pass for the Marriott, I have done this on a cruise and plan to do it again in March (my husband golfs at the Marriott course). Perhaps not the nicest beach on the island but only about 15 minutes from the cruise port (many of the others suggested, while nice, are much farther away -- Turtle Beach and Cockleshell beach took us about 40 minutes from the Marriott and probably 50 minutes from town, would be an expensive cab ride, Friar's is closer) The Marriott beach is large and wide and you can walk for a long distance. They have lots of chairs and palapas, shops, a casino, restaurants, it is not my favorite resort by any means but a good place to spend the day.

The Marriott beach is rough water as it is on the Atlantic side. A quick jaunt to the leeward side is South Frigate Bay beach which is calm with a little restaurant there and beach chairs you can rent. South Friar's Beach is also a nice beach to visit.
