New Tobago Hilton Resort?

Does anyone know anything about the new Tobago Hilton resort? It supposedly has a PGA golf course. The Hilton website has very little info.

I was in Tobago about a year ago and saw the Hilton while it was still under construction. That place has been under construction for a long time. But, I did walk the beach that it is on, and can comment on it and the general area.

The hotel is on the Atlantic side of the island, just south of Scarborough. It sits at the end of a mile-long beach, which is backed most of the way by coconut palms, and very breezy. During high tide, the beach is really narrow in spots, and during low tide, it is wide, and the sand is hard-packed. It's a nice place to walk. Since this is the Atlantic side, the water is rough, and probably not very good for swimming. As for the area surrounding the hotel, it is removed from the rest of the tourist area which is near the airport at Crown Point (not that that's bad).

I am planning to go to Tobago in May. I have not had much success trying to get info about the Hilton. There are no pictures posted in the Hilton site and no comments about it. At this point I am inclined to go to Coco reef (they have a summer special that is significant less expensive than their regular rate). Has anyone been to Coco Reef recently? Any comments on either Coco Reef or the Hilton?

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Tobago. We spent a week at the Coco Reef. While the hotel is in a good location (it has its own private beach and is about a mile walk to Pigeon Point, which is one of the prettiest beaches on the island), I'm afraid that we had a very negative experience with the hotel. The problem was that they appeared to have substantially overbooked their rooms. We had prepaid to stay in an ocean view deluxe room, but when we arrived we were given a room that looked over an (inland) construction site and an alleyway where the hotel stores lumber and oil drums. When we complained to the manager on duty, we were told that we had not reserved an ocean-view room. When we asked to see the hotel's paperwork regarding our reservation, the manager hid it and said it was "private." It was only when we contacted our travel agent, who in turn contacted the hotel, that a hotel manager admitted that we had indeed reserved an ocean view room (which we didn't get until half way through our stay). We found the whole process very frustrating, and the hotel management generally didn't apologize or even acknowledge that there was a problem. We also met a large number of other guests who said that the same thing had happened to them. You may be better off at the Hilton.
Thanks for your e-mail E&J. I had read the same comment from British tourists. I sent an e-mail to Coco Reef telling them about the numerous negative reviews and they promised to honor the ocean view reservation. Which other hotel would you recommend?
Thanks.
We stopped by the Togabo Hilton briefly while driving around the island. We didn't see any of the rooms, but did see the lobby and the beach/pool area. The lobby is very bright and airy, and has beautiful & dramatic views of the Atlantic Ocean. The beach and pool area looked very nice -- also with very dramatic views of the ocean. The one drawback about the beach at the Tobago Hilton is that, because it is on the Atlantic side of the island, the waves are quite rough and we're not sure whether you'd be able to swim there. We met some people who stayed at the Tobago Hilton who said that their room was very nice, with many amenities. They did, however, say that the food was mainly American food -- and that there wasn't much opportunity to try local food at the hotel.

While we did not visit the Arnos Vale hotel, we have heard good things about it. From what we've heard, the rooms are relatively simple, but that they are set on a hill overlooking the sea and that there are a lot of plants and birds that make for a very pretty tropical setting. We were also told that each afternoon, the hotel puts out food for the birds -- and that because there are so many beautiful tropical birds in Tobago, it is quite a show when they come to feed.

If you do end up staying at the Coco Reef, we would recommend that you do not pay for dinners (i.e., don't go Modified American Plan). The food at dinner (mainly at Tamaras) was sometimes quite bland. There are numerous restaurants within walking distance to the hotel, and you might want to have the flexibility of being able to try those restaurants if you don't want to eat all of your meals at the Coco Reef.

Finally, just a couple of highlights of Tobago: the beach at Pigeon Point (very pretty, with lots of palm trees; there are food stands for refreshments and they rent chaise lounges there), lunch at Jenna's in Speyside (good local food with a great view of the ocean) and Englishman's Bay (a beautiful and nearly deserted beach on the Caribbean side of the island).

Enjoy!
