There is actually a thread on my St. Kitts forum about cell phones on St. Kitts and Nevis. Go to myislands.myeyez.net
search for the thread under the "Circus" about cell phones and nextel phones.
I am sure that this will help answer your questions!

Many do work, but be careful. I know people who have used theirs thinking that they would not be charged $$$ and they ended up with crazy bills when they returned home. But if you find out yours will work, you could bring it in case you really needed it.
I know Cingular works on Nevis (just used mine there 2 weeks ago) and I am pretty sure Verizon works also. Best to check with your provider to see if your phone company has reciprocal arrangements with one of the providers on the island. As MIM says Roaming fees can be high.
TMobile does not work. We ended up using one of the tourist phones near the ferry dock (credit card). Two five minute phone calls to the US cost us $40. Worth it though, since a hurricane was threatening Florida at the time
.
Thanks for your info
Just back from St Kitts..my Cingular Blackberry was fully functional..email, phone and IM. My finance's Verizon phone didn't work at all.
