I've never been to the Caribbean, and have a 5-6 day vacation time reserved in mid-November (20th to 25th). Any recommendations for a quick reasonably priced resort or an island to consider? Or even resources that may give me a better idea?
I am obviously planning this last second and am not well prepared. Have a girlfriend in another state (with her birthday) and am looking to get away for a few days at a reasonable price. I would put a limit of $2,000 for a 5-6 day trip, and would hope for it to come under this amount, but wouldn't be killed or that annoyed if it didn't. Though certainly, reasonably priced is better.
I've never been to the Caribbean because I'm not much of a beach goer. But I am looking to relax for a few days. What I really love is trying new foods, or at least getting fresh and interesting dishes. I'm not a picky eater and enjoy the heights and lows of cuisine. Visiting the beach occassionally, but also just relaxing, reading, looking at fish, drinking, trying new restaurants, etc. This sort of vacation is far from my dream trip (I love Europe and Asia, seeing sights, etc.), but is something I would like to try at least once in my life.
I know I'm being incredibly vague but would welcome any advice (other than do research : ) ...I will certainly research any suggestions.
Thanks in advance.

Fly to Aruba. Stay @ the Radisson or Hyatt.
Where do you live?
You should go to St Martin, it's quite expensive, but for this time of year you'll find deals on hotel rooms (Radisson, Westin, Sonesta Maho (although we don't really like the latter)). Great island with great food (Gourmet Capital of Caribbean, so lots of fantastic restaurants, but also lots of cheaper local food places)... and apparently the one Caribbean island that most people return to... In any case we love it.

Princess Heights (gets rave reviews, but slightly on the wrong side of island for us) has special offers on at the moment, excellent value: http://www.princessheights.com/special.php

Enjoy.
Try Puerto Rico and explore Old Town and the forts- a lot of interesting sightseeing and good food- beautiful water and nice views if the beach is not your main objective. There are nice beaches farther out of San Juan. Depending on where you live you might find great prices on flights to SJ.
The main thing is where are you travelling from? With such a short time, you'd want a quick flight.
At this time of year with the info you have given, I agree that Aruba is a good choice.
I alos recommend Puerto Rico. There is the great rain forest to explore, history, beaches, culture, great restaurants. It fits all your needs and you don't need a passport fro the US.
You should certainly get a package deal that includes flights and a hotel. Mexico has the most values right now rather than the islands, but you can also get some good deals on the islands. For a short trip, limit yourself to destinations you can reach in no less than 4 hours of flying time, preferably on a nonstop flight, and watch the return times. Some of those packages have you returning at 8am, which means your 5 days is actually 3-1/2.
