Negril, Jamaica activity suggestions?

We'll be staying in a mid-level resort on Seven Mile Beach. Two things we'd like to do would be to take in some authentic scenery in the mountains, perhaps a local waterfall, authentic hills rum bar, etc. And the other would be to go to a beach party with some genuine local culture/reggae - not something touristy set up for for the resorts. I don't mind a bit if a touristy vibe, but the closer to authentic culture, the better. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Oh, side question - are there any rivers local to Negril that have the banana boat rides?

hello there, we just got back from Jamaica. I hope your stay is better than ours. Just be prepared, 'NO PROBLEM MON' is something you will hear a lot. When you are on vacation for only 7 days, 2 days of which were travel, eventually things will start to irritate you. NOT saying you won't have fun, just saying to relax an go with the flow when you're there, otherwise it will wreck your vacation. Our time was valuable, definitely enjoyed the Bob Marley Tour!!! Very informative, and the guide was amazing. Good luck and have fun

There is the YS Falls, Mayfield Falls, Black River, Appleton Rum Factory and Pelican Bar, which would meet some of the things that you are looking for. You will need to either hire a private driver to take you to these locations or go on your resort's sponsored tour.

The YS Falls, Black River and Appleton Rum is a full day (very long) tour. Those attractions are many miles away from Negril and it takes a full day to get to them all and back.

The Pelican Bar is out in the middle of the water, so you have to have someone take you by boat to get there.

JTL Tours is the local tour operator for all areas of Jamaica.

http://www.jamaicatoursltd.com/

Their web-site will give you a good example of what is offered there. Realize though, that Jamaica is not the type of destination that you can just walk off your resort and/or rent a car and go do things on your own. Negril is kinda secluded and most attractions are pretty far away. If you do not want to use a tour operator, there are several private drivers you can hire. We used A to J Jamaica Planners. You can also google for recommendations or use the search feature here.

I love Negril! Sorry can't help as I've never done any tours or formalized activities.

For the local-style beach parties you'll see flyers posted around.

I spent 10 days there and was happy just going to the beach, hanging out on the Cliffs, walking the road, having some great meals, sunning, reading, etc.

There is a very good forum on Trip Advisor for Negril.
