Navigating Carnival

Will be staying at Lions Dive Resort Feb 2 - 10, want to be a spectator for Grande Parade Feb 3 and the Farewell Parade Feb 5. On the Carnival web site they want to sell me a spectators package. Is that recommmended, or should I simply watch from the street? If so where are the best viewing areas?

I will want to rent a car, but because of the crowds, should I rent it for the entire time I am there to make sure I have it?

Would you advise driving it to see the parades or finding a shuttle or bus?

Not sure if Lions Dive Resort is with in walking distance to town.
