My horrible experience at Atlantis Royal Towers Bahamas

So many things went wrong at this hotel that I don't know where to begin. I stayed for a week in 10/08, 5 days of which were for a conference. On arrival I noticed there were clothes in the bathroom. I called the next morning and asked if someone could pick them up and that did not happen. Finally left them hanging outside door and 2 days later they were picked up. Day 2 ironed white pants and it spit black stuff all over them. They did bring me new iron. Day 2 Internet did not work. After lots of time, many phone calls, and waiting for someone to show up they did move furniture around in order to do some work with TV. Apparently was missing connection wires. They then double charged me for this, i.e. more phone calls. Day 3 very foul smell in bathroom, as if someone just used it. Day 4 & 5 my room was NEVER cleaned, despite me setting clean button and making more calls. Day 5 booked snorkeling trip through hotel but they did not have me on list. Nearly missed bus running around trying to figure out where my tickets were. Never found them but bus driver told me my name was familiar so took me. When arrived they wanted to charge me again. I had them call hotel and was told I did pay. Day 6 phone and Internet did not work. Had to wait on line at front desk for 30min as could not call. Said they would fix it. Returned that evening and still not fixed, only to wait again. I was there alone first 4 days but charged as if 4 people in room for entire week. There are so many hidden charges it is unbelievable. You have bellman (never saw him, no one there to even open door for me on my departure), maid service gratuities, pool fees, taxes, usage fees (electricity), and fees for each additional person in room. I won't even go into cost of food which is astronomical and not that good. Gratuities are included in everything so no one has incentive to work. I haven't even gotten to the worst thing believe it or not. Every morning I noticed a few small bug bites on me. Did not pay much attention at first but by end of trip I counted over 60 bites that were extremely itchy. I never saw any bugs on this island so I believe came from bed in room. My family also had some but not as bad as were only there a few days. We were not the only guests having issues and everyone I encountered had some complaint about their room. There is some good. The facilities are beautiful and we really enjoyed the pools, rides, aquariums, beaches, and the lazy river was great. Most of the staff were very nice. We did end up having a great time on this trip as we tried not to let the above get us down and focused on enjoying the facilities. I did get 2 credits, one for $100, and the other about $80 which were a small percentage of my bill. The first credit was offered after the iron fiasco, the other I had to fight for as I was being overcharged for having people in my room that were not there. I still think they did not credit me enough but did not have the energy to argue with them. I will never stay in this hotel again and will not recommend it to anyone.

If you want to go there again, stay at "Comfort Suites" right across the street. It's very nice and includes all access to Atlantis beach and pool activities, plus breakfast is included. IMO you can walk across the street in the same amount of time it takes to get an elevator and walk across the grounds.

The older buildings of Atlantis are just that--old. The newer ones are very nice, but also very pricy. The outside activities can't be beat.

Thanks for the report. It seems like the prices at the Atlantis keep going up while the value keeps going down. Agree with the above poster -- Comfort Suites across the street is a great way to get the Atlantis facilities without the price gouging/slipshod service/etc.

We stayed in the Towers 4 years ago with our 2 kids and our room was awful! Peeling wallpaper, smelly and furthest from the cool slides - at least a 20 minute walk! The Atlantis is a very cool place for the kids but stay somewhere else and get a day pass! But like most hotels get to the pool chairs early!
Also, food is mediocre and service is slow.

I also had an awful time at Atlantis in 9/08. It was very crowded and way over priced! It would have been good enough to stay some where else and just visit there for a day. The best part about Atlantis was the beach, but it was crowded and there was almost a fight between 2 ladies near us while we were just trying to relax lol!
