Don't see this come up much in these posts, but was wondering what the mosquitoes are like on Young Island in Feb. They tend to find my wife most delectable, which is why she always prefers Bermuda. We stayed on the rainforest side of Guadalupe a few years ago & got eaten alive every night, and the pictures of St. Vincent seem very similar. Thanks

Sorry, just saw the 9/11 question on this topic, was reading the Young Island Thread, not the St. Vincent thread.
I know that they are a problem on summer evenings, but a friend who goes to YI in November and December was surprised when I mentioned the mosquitoes.
If you have not fully committed to St. Vincent we found it less than average of the 20 islands we have stayed at over the past 15 years. Young Island Resort could be the most over-rated place we have vacationed at in 28 years of travel.
I was at Young Island for 4 days last April. The mosquitos were non existent. (to put it in perspective, I just returned from 2 days in St John and 2 days is St Thomas and my wife had about 60 mosquito bites. So mosquitos are a big problem for my wife.)
There are a plethera of geckos, salamanders and iguanas on the island, and I think they keep the mosquito population down to zero. My wife had no mosquito bites there.
We had a fantastic time on the island. The food was great, the service was terrific and we really enjoyed out bungalow.
The pool was beautiful and always empty, same for the beaches. (the great thing about being a private island resort; no crowds, no noise and lots of privacy.)
We hope to get back in the future!

Looking into Young Island for a vacation next November/December. I have read mostly positive posts and sounds like we will love it.
Stan - could you provide more specifics as to why you think it is overrated? Too much hype, not enough for the value. You sound well traveled - what are you using to compare.

My fiance and I just happened upon Young Island's website. I have read mostly positive reviews, and get a generally good feeling about this place. However, I too am interested in why some consider it "below average" or overrated. I personally have never been anywhere in the Caribbean, so for me it's probably more important that it is a nice, clean , safe, enjoyable and relaxing atmosphere set in nature. Not looking to be big on nightlife, etc. I am sure there is a lot out there, but I want to know if my hunch about Young Island is accurate!
To Wahoo86- mosquitos were present, but I didn't get eaten alive. No better or worse than other tropical isles we've visited.
With that said:
To Nutmeg78- I think there are much nicer properties for a honeymoon. My husband and I spent 9 days at Young Island in October of 2004 and thought it was a huge disappointment. I completely agree with StanKase that the property is overrated. The property itself is nice, well landscaped with simple, tasteful rooms. BUT- The noise from the mainland is horrible on Friday and Saturday nights with the music from the bars blaring into your room till the wee hours of the morning. Young Island allows staff/friends to use the "private" beach and the Saturday and Sunday we hoped to relax and read on the beach was instead filled with over 20 screaming children and their parents(more than the total number of guests on the property). But my main problem with Young Island was the cold, unhelpful staff.
For example- we were never greeted with so much as a “Hello” or smile whenever we entered the main office. After initiating a greeting and making a request/asking a question, the front desk staff’s response was often a blank stare or an “I don’t know”.
Simple things like making SCUBA reservations, fixing a clogged toilet, finding out what time the ferries ran (conflicting schedules were posted) and purchasing stamps were a huge hassle.
While the restaurant/bar staff was a little better, no one seemed happy to be there, and smiles were few and far between. And don’t even think about taking out a complimentary sunfish for a sail unless you want to have the beach attendant standing with his arms crossed staring at you the entire time and glaring at you if you came anywhere near the border of the “safe” sailing zone.
Bottom line: nice property, but short on service.
