More St. Kitts Questions

Thank you to all who responded to my Marriott questions! You're very helpful! We do plan on leaving the resort quite a bit and we've rented a car for a week while we're there. Which leads me to my next round of questions...

1. How easy is it to park in Basseterre, and is there a charge?

2. Are there gas stations all over the island, or only in Basseterre?

3. Are there any parts of the island to avoid? I've heard that St. Kitts is quite safe and friendly, but I've also seen photos of buisinesses and homes downtown with bars on the doors/windows.

4. Has anyone been to the market in town and is there a best or worst day to go?

Thank you!

Hi,

There is on-street parking at no charge in Basseterre. You may have to circle the block a few times but I've never found parking difficult. No meters!

There is also a parking lot near the cruise ship dock. Not sure if there is a charge there, but, if so, it's not much.

The gas station I go to is quite near the airport. One tank of gas usually lasts a weeek. Shouldn't be a problem for you. The island isn't that big, and there are smaller stations at other locations.

There is one main road around the island. I've never felt unsafe driving all around.

Not sure about the market. There is a craft market near Port Zante when the cruise ships are in. That's right in Basseterre, and there is a food market on Saturdays, I think. Others may give you more information.

When you drive around the island, go to Caribelle Batik, Brimstone Hill, maybe have a drink or lunch at Rawlins Plantation, the Golden Lemon, or Ottley's. All very beautiful plantation inns.

Again, I don't proclaim to be a reliable source of info...but...we took taxis everywhere in St. Kitts and saw the bars on windows...not to worry! What a wonderful place. I would walk around alone while DH exlplored other options. I plan on doing so this summer when he takes the volcano tour and I don't want to. Seen one......ha ha...For a point of reference, we saw the bars on windows in Aruba, and had a good reason to be leary...a huge street fight broke out amongst the locals and it was something. But, hey, I go downtown to Richmond, Va. and can witness the same thing!!

Ah Santa, you're a breath of fresh air!

jk: For beaches outside the Marriott, I recommend (in order of proximity to you), South Frigate Bay, and its beach bars--Shiggedy Shack and Monkey Bar, South Friars Beach and the Shipwreck Bar, Cockeleshell Beach and Lion's Bar, and Turtle Beach and it's restaurant and bar.

Yes, St. Kitts is safe. Use common sense with regards to your belongings, lock your car and hotel doors, etc.

Avoid Irish Town.
