Has anyone ever had any reason to use the hospitals in Grenada? We are scheduled to go late April for 10 days. Had to cancel a trip last year for medical reasons and hoping to go this year but my husband always seems to have some type of medical issue going on, and although we always get med. evacuation insurance, wondering about the type of care available on the island as some problems could require immediate attention.
Trying to make a decision about whether to cancel the trip or not and go somewhere in the US instead.

Emergency medical care in Grenada is at best, inadequate. The staff is ok, but they really don't have the modern equipment to deal with serious emergencies and medication is a real issue. The hospital is also NOT affiliated with the medical school. If your husband has a serious medical emergency, he could be airlifted to Barbados or Trinindad, which is only a 45 minute flight away. If medical care is a real issue for you, I would recommend amore developed country or somewhere in the US.
Medical care is limited.There is a small not great off-shore medical school there with students that could not get into US
schools not much help there. The main facility is St. Georges General Hospital (Richmond Hill, St. George's; tel. 473-440-2051, 2052). There is a small private hospital in the St. Paul's district (St Augustine's Medical Services, tel. 473-440-6173, 6174, 6175; website http://www.samsgrenada.com/), which has a 24-hour emergency room and can arrange for air ambulance evacuation, if necessary. There are also two small rural hospitals: Princess Alice Hospital (tel. 473-443-7400), located in the St Andrew's district of the main island, and the Princess Royal Hospital (tel. 473-443-7400), located on the island of Carriacou. Most doctors and hospitals will expect payment in cash, regardless of whether you have travel health insurance. Serious medical problems will require air evacuation to a country with state-of-the-art medical facilities.

Have been in contact with a dr at the private hospital, who advised they can stabilize the patient for evacation. We always get medical evac. insurance (Medjet) and a short term policy that would cover my husband since Medicare doesnt cover outside the US.
The trip is next month.
