Marriott or Lion's Dive your choice?

Jump to last reply

I am going to Curacao with my husband for 3 nights. We would like a good snorkling area close to the hotel, an alright beach, but even better water. I have seen all the picks, but don't know if the Sea Aquarium water is better than the Marriott's. We also want to be close to town for the evenings. How much will cab fares run between these places? Any timely input is helpful.

Can't comment on Lions Dive.....But We stayed in November 2002 at the Marriott. We chose this resort and this island because we are divers and Curacao is supposed to have particularly good shore diving. In addition to several boat dives with the on-site dive shop, Carib Sea Sports, we also dove the Marriott house reef, which was a wonderful reef just a few strokes from the beach. The water was probably perfect for snorkeling as well. The beach at the Marriott is supposed to be one of the best on that side of Curacao. It's white, powdery, wide and only rocky in places (the water activities desk at the pool provided hard-bottomed water socks free of charge. You just had to sign them in and out....but they weren't necessary unless you ventured out into the rocks). I think Lions Dive Resort might have been closer to town than the Marriott. The Marriott does offer two free shuttle trips daily to town...one departing the hotel at 9AM with a 12PM pickup and an afternoon trip out at 2PM and back by 6pm. We took advantage of the free shuttle a few times, but the shuttle never went into town at meal times (probably smart of the hotel management....a way to get guests to eat at the hotel!). We did go into town on our own via taxi one evening for dinner, but it was $10 each way...so it wasn't something you could do every meal. The only thing I'd do differently would be rent a car to get to town for meals and also to get to several of the locations around the island where the shore diving and snorkeling was supposedly really good.

The Lion's is on a large white sand beach and is known as a diver's hotel. It's a half hour's drive from the airport. Very standard rooms. The Marriott is the most beautiful hotel on the island and is on the most popular beach. It's a 10 minute drive from the airport and the downtown area. The Marriott has a shuttle that takes you into the downtown area where they have some really good shops and restaurants. At night, you have to drive or take a taxi. If you ask, they will tell you if someone else is going to your same destination and you can split the cab fare. Go a little early and they have a section where vendors sell authenic jewelry, etc.
