Can someone recommend first class hotel in Nevis in July? Other posters said 4S draws alot of families and I am looking for property in that same class without lots of kids. Thanks for any suggestion.

Have you looked at Nisbeth Plantation? Have no personal experience, but have heard it is very nice (one of Princess Diana's favourties)

From my one trip to Nevis last fall (loved it! can't wait to go again), I would suggest looking at two places. Nisbet Plantation is right on the beach and rooms are nice little semi-detached cottages. The beach is beautiful and lined with palms and the casual beach restaurant offers very tasty fare at reasonable prices. The water is a little rough for doing serious swimming, or at least it was the time I visited, but still fun to get in and be gently buffeted by the swells. The beach is nice for walking along, as there are palms along the way for shade. There are a couple dozen of palapas with beach loungers set up along the beach and a few hammocks.

Montpelier Plantation is my other suggestion. It is on the mountainside rather than beachside, but the hotel does offer a complimentary shuttle to its beach club on Pinney's Beach. The feeling here exudes graciousness, tropical charm, and understated sophistication. (Actually, it was here the Princess Diana stayed, not Nisbet.) The food and the service and both outstanding here and in my opinion is a cut above Nisbet, but if you really love the beach you might want to choose Nisbet.

Then again, Nevis is such a compact island that it would be a shame to stay put in any one resort rather than drive around and explore things for yourself--maybe a combined stay at Nisbet and Montpelier would be ideal, and I think that the two hotels actually offer a split package together.

Whichever you decide, I hope you enjoy Nevis as much as I did. I'd recommend checking out www.nevis1.com, which represents one man's dedication to the island and all of his recommmend hotels, restaurants, and activities.

We just returned from 4S Nevis and did not feel it was over-run with children. There were a few obnoxious grown-ups (loud and drunk) who seemed to be on a business outing. If you request a room at the south end of the resort, I think they keep it quieter. The groups with children will want to be by the north pool, not the quiet pool. We had a lovely stay and the food at all three 4S restaurants is excellent. We also dined at Montpelier, which is stunning and delicious. For a weeklong stay, though, I preferred being just footsteps from the beach and the golf course.

(In fact, I have heard that type of guest behavior is very common at FS, and that is the main reason we would not return to that resort...)

jontz, ejcrowe's recommendations of Nisbet and Montpelier are right on the mark, but neither one of those will compare to FS for amenities and environs if you are looking for "resort" accommodations.

We just returned from Nevis on Saturday and stayed at Nisbet Plantation. It is very beautiful and right on the beach. The only down side was that the rooms are not that luxurious compared to what we are used to but that was the only thing I did not love. We visited the 4 Seasons and it was beautiful. I did not see alot of children while we were there but there def were some. I am sure you will be happy with either place. We wanted the mountains and the beach so we did Nisbet and then stayed at Ottleys Plantations on St. Kitts and absolutely loved it.(just another option)

There's a big difference between the "luxury" of the 4S and what is offered at Nisbet Plantation Beach Resort but Nisbett is a very nicly run hotel with very good service and comfortable but fairly standard type rooms. By the way, ejcrowe's descriptions of 4S, Nisbet and Montpelier are very accurate. If you are looking for luxury you are pretty much limited to 4S as no other place on Nevis comes close, other then perhaps a rental villa (but you won't have all the amenities of the 4S resort).

The "second" nicest place on the island is Montpelier which is a small mountainside resort with 12 well appointed rooms (think of it as an Old World Caribbean style elegantly run Bed and Breakfast style Plantation - although they have what is arguably the finest dinner restaurant on the island). You won't encounter very many children, if any, at Montpelier.

4s does have families but I've never seen an abundance of children there and I've been to the resort in just about every month of the year. It is by no means a "family style" resort like Beaches. They have an extensive children's program which tends to keep the little ones occupied and out of site. The resort itself is quite large and there is an adults only pool so it's pretty easy to avoid what few children there are at the resort.
