Looking for Quaint, Vibrant culture, history. Which island is best?

Hi:
Does anyone out there know the island I am searching for?. I do like the beach but am interested in seeing some of the historical background, either through ruins or quaint towns, and a vibrant local culture. Are Martinique or Jamaica or Turcs and Caicos my best bet?
