Long Bay or Sugar Mill?
my boyfriend and i are going to tortola the 1st of march. we're debating between long bay beach resort and sugar mill hotel. we can get a package at sugar mill that includes 4 dinners, a jeep, massage, etc. we've seen mixed reviews about long bay...especially that the beach is rocky and the service isn't that great. has anyone been to either recently? any thoughts? we're trying to make reservations today..and would love to get feedback beforehand. thanks in advance.

Long Bay is an absolutely beautiful long sandy white beach, but yes rocky, it would be difficult swimming, especially in wintery months such as March, service was good though...Also,need to stay beach front!!! I would not advise hillside...Sugar Mill, not on a beach, more romatic inn-like..<BR>

I vote Long Bay! We stayed there a few years ago, so can't speak to current service, but our hillside villa was gorgeous, breezy, beautiful views. And it was two story with a separate upstairs suite with minibar with a great balcony, which you could maybe book for alot less $$ than the whole villa. Also the beachfront cabanas looked really great, truly beachfront. We walked a couple hundred yards to the left for rock-free swimming (and topless too if you liked). Sugar Mill has a great restaurant, but their tiny beach is across the street from the hotel. And their rooms don't get such good reviews that I've seen.

I'd choose Frenchman's Cay over both of them. Sugar Mill is hidden in the foliage across the road from a tiny spit of sand they call beach. don't think it's even a natural beach but not sure. Long Bay is large impresonal and overpriced. Beach is nice but not good for swimming.

We've been to Long Bay twice and we just love it. We never really hung out at the beach right in front of the hotel but opted instead for Smuggler's Cove which is a short (free) ride away. Also, both times we went under the Adventure Package which I felt was a pretty good deal. ALlowed us to get out and see other things on the island and neighboring islands. I do agree that the staff was not overly friendly but I would say that was the only negative and it really didn't matter too much to us since they left us alone. I wouldn't splurge for the Beachfront Cabanas because we did that the first time and they were outdated. You can't go wrong with any of the other rooms though. They are nice although basic. Anyway, highly recommend Long Bay. We want to go back!
