Hi all,
My husband and I went on a fantastic trip to St. john in 2007 and we are headed back for a second visit in March! We will be leaving our three kids with the grandparents and couldn't be more excited.
So, its been 5 years since we visited. Can anyone update me on the dining scene? Last time we went to La Tapa, Equator, Morgan's Mango and Asolare, and another place that I can't remember the name. We loved Tapa, but thought Asolare was pretentious. We like upscale dining, but not stuffy. I'm a seafood lover and he loves beef, meat of all kinds, man food. Any suggestions?
We'll be staying at Gallows.
Thanks!!
Long absence from St John - any new restaurants?

There are new restaurants on St. John since 2007.
For dinner we enjoyed Fatty Crab:

Just opened last year but didn't try:

Great place to stop in for a beer or cocktail:

The waterfront bistro isn't exactly new, but I don't believe it was around back in 2007. Good food but a bit overpriced IMO:

Joe's Rum Hut has now expanded and offers food as well:

Good place for breakfast besides JJ's:

Hope this helps!

Great reply! Thanks Susan, Im going to work my way through these links.
Great thread! We'll be there from 3rd til 13 th of March. Staying in Coral Bay.
I second Fatty Crab. Interesting menu. Cool atmosphere. Reasonable prices. GREAT SERVICE!
Most dishes have an Asian-fusion-island twist ...spicy, fresh. Best part is the dishes are appetizer size and you are encouraged to order several. They come to the table like courses.
Follow-up:
to Donkey Diner for screwing up order.
to Skinny Legs for just plain bad food and drink.
We ordered pizza one night from Donkey Diner. Asked for it to be ready in 90 minutes; they said no problem. When we went to pick it up - it had never been made. Very unhappy campers!
Had dinner at Skinny Legs instead, as it was late and we were hungry and didn't want to trek somewhere else. It was our second meal there during this trip.
The food was meh. It was never great food, but it was really pretty poor. Salads one night, burgers the second time.
The drinks were also subpar. I forgot that they don't do blended drinks [or maybe that is new with new owners] so my Pina Colado was awful. Second drink, I figured just go with rum and pineapple juice. The pineapple juice was either watered down or Crystal Light - weak and almost transparent.
Have to give
and
DebitNM, sorry you didn't have a better experience.
To update our trip....
LA TAPA - We went to here our first night and it was excellent with fantastic service. Great, original food although quite pricey.
MORGAN'S MANGO - is past its prime. Nothing special at all. Much more family oriented than romantic.
THE FATTY CRAB - LOVED LOVED LOVED the Fatty Crab. So fun, so good, spicy, so different. Its got a very youthful atmosphere and the food is a sort of nouveau malaysian. So good we went twice. And affordable
TERRACE - too expensive for small portions and food that is fancy but nothing original or terribly interesting.
I hope to post a quick trip report soon!
We had a nice lunch at Uncle Joe's before catching the ferry to head home. Consistent, reliable good BBQ.
Also, had dinner at Concordia Cafe. Strange conch fritters, small mushy and overpriced [Vie's they're not!]Josephine's Greens for $12???[buy a whole bag right from her for a fraction of the price]; fish and chips [swai] was ok, pasta special was salty and mahi mahi was a winner.
The best meals were at the house~~
Love Uncle Joe's BBQ! Gorged ourselves there for lunch one day. yum
