Living in the Caribbean part-time

I'd like to visit St. John, St. Marteen, St Croix, Antigua, Anguilla, Barbuda and a few more islands to see what's out there. I would live in the Caribbean half the time and Florida the other half. I'm about 2 or 3 years away from making the move, but want to get a head start so I know where I want to settle when the time comes. I wanted to get a feel from a few people that have already done what I'm about to do. I'm looking for a safe island with great views of other islands in the area that would also be close enough to visit by boat and not have to take a plane to get there. I'm also wondering if there are some other lesser known little islands out there. The night life isn't that important, but going to see a show at a casino and maybe some live music every now and then would be nice. Anyone out there been through what I'm about to explore? Thanks for any input.

Have done this in the past.

Remote islands do not have shows and casinos.

So for what you want might base in San Juan or DR

Island hop around from there.

If you carefully research you can do it pretty cheaply.

www.spirit.com cheapest flights down from FLL.

Happy Hunting,

Living in the Caribbean is much different than being there on vacation and on many islands they have restrictions on obtaining residency and/or purchasing property so you have to do your homework.

Since you live in Florida I assume you are a US citizen, if that's the case you can easily relocate to Puerto Rico, Culebra, Vieques or any of the US Virgin Islands as you already have citizenship/resident status.

For starters, go to the USVI Relocation website (www.vimovingcenter.com) - it's a website dedicated to living and working in the VI's. There's a ton of information there and a very active forum. Read ALL the material there (it will take weeks) and you'll find answers to all your questions and some you haven't even thought of yet. While the material is geared toward living/working in the USVI much of what is written applies to any island in the Caribbean.

Also do a few google searches using topics such as "Living on NAME OF ISLAND" or "Relocating to NAME OF ISLAMD" and you'll find lots of information.

Finally, if you are considering relocating to an island where you are not a citizen you should know they will probably be restrictions on the amount of time you can stay on those islands in any given year as well as requirements for getting approval to own property and in most instances you wold not be able to work without obtaining a Work Permit (which are usually very difficult to get). You should visit the official government website for any island you are considering in oder to find out the requirements for moving to that island.

I just discovered the TV show "Househunters International" on the home & garden channel and thought of this post, Mike. The shows featured mostly Europe but also places in the Caribbean, Anguilla was one of them. I'm not sure how much practical help it would be, but it was inspirational to see the possibilities! On the show they thoroughly tour 3 different homes and show a bit about the surrounding area.

(Now I want to move to Nicaragua or Belize -ha!)

Hi Suze. I've been watching Househunters International religiously for awhile now. Great show, I love it. And I will check out that website Roamsaround. It looks like a couple of good book recommendations that I will take advantage of. Belize and Costa Rica are also in the mix. Looks inexpensive.
