Leaving a car at the ferry to Vieques

Hi,

We are going to Vieques for one night and we don't think we can bring our car. I read in the guidebook that there is a parking lot at the ferry. Is it allowed and safe to leave our car at this lot overnight?

Thanks in advance for the info.

Alice

Hi Alice,

I am looking into the same thing. I read on a Frommer's discussion that you can bring your car onto the ferry to Vieques for $17.

While it is off season in Vieques (peak is January through Easter), getting a car onto the ferry is difficult, especially for a non resident of PR. You have to reserve with the PR Port Authority over a week in advance and even then there is no guarantee. And as luck would have it, the ferries that are least crowded are the afternoon ferry to Vieques and the early morning ferry from Vieques. I think it is best to rent a Jeep from one of the two reputable businesses on Vieques (Martineau and Mauritza's). You can pick up as early as 8AM (they can send a car to pick you up at your hotel), or return as late as 5PM. Vieques for one night is such a tease. You will want to go back for a week to explore all the beaches and get into their unique "Island Time." Good luck!

We just got back and it was no problem to leave the car there. There is a secure lot that costs $5 a day right next to the ferry. Going to Vieques was very easy but it would be good to have a car there since it was hard to get taxis. We were not allowed to bring our rental car there and I think the car ferry only goes a few days a week so it is best to get a car when you get there. We also tried to go to Culebra but that ferry is much smaller so get there a few hours early for tickets to Culebra.
