Finally!!! Someone that has actually been there. This place has been on my radar for some time. All I have really been able to hear is.....<BR><BR>it's a very large property?<BR>little if any beach front accomodations?<BR>what beach there is is so so?<BR>many kinds of accomodations?<BR>food is OK?<BR>service is OK?<BR>getting there is easy w/ AA?<BR>most popular mode of trans is golf cart?<BR>golf is very good?<BR> <BR>can you please comment on all these questions? It may be somewhere I'd like to visit, but there is so little info that I'm not willing to take that chance. Thank You!!!

This is the second time we had been to CdC, 17 years ago on our honeymoon. Needless to say the resort has aged better than us. Now to your questions:<BR><BR>It is a very large property, golf cart is necessary<BR><BR>you would have to rent a villa to get beachfront accomodations<BR><BR>the beach is ok, very similar to the beach at half moon in jamaica<BR><BR>accomodations range from casitas to 10 bedrooms villas, we had a superior room and it was just fine<BR><BR>food was WONDERFUL, however a couple of the restarunts were not opened, one did reopen while we were there but we were not notified until it was too late<BR><BR>service was great<BR><BR>teeth of the dog is a great course, with hole 15 very reminisent of #10 at pebble beach, the links course if played from the tips is enjoyable<BR><BR>If you have any other questions, would be happy to help

Hi Robert! Thanks for offering to answer questions. I haven't been to the half moon bay beach - could you describe the Casa de Campo beach in more detail (waves, sand, length, any snorkeling). Any watersports? What type of excursions do they have outside the resort and how much do they cost? What are the best things to do besides play golf and go horseback riding?

i guess the beach is about 1/2 mile long, water is very calm and they have windsufers, kayaks etc... We did not snorkel or take any excursions off the resort so i am unable to help you there. This was a very laid back vaca for us. The resort is currently putting the finishing touches on their new marina. If this flys it will be tremendous, picture a small colorful caribbean fishing village but instead of fishing vessel the marina is filled with multi-million dollar yachts(saw at least 3 that were over 100' when we were there. The village is host to high end shops and restaurants.

We have heard that you can fly directly into Casa de Campo or did you fly into SantoDomingo? Also, is it 1 or more beaches and are they sandy, rocky or coral? Is the water caribbean blue? We will be traveling as two families with children of various ages. Would this be a good choice for family vacation? Thanks for your help!

Casa de Campo y Central Romana
The owners of Casa de Campo and the Romana Corporation are the Fanjul family who live in Miami. They are the owners of Flo-Sun which is among the largest sugar producers in the US. They also own a sugar plantation, Central Romana, in the Dominican Republic. I was doing some internet research on them and this Fodor website came up in the Google search. This week on Canadian television (September 27, 2005) there was a documentary entitled “Big Sugar” and the Central Romana plantation was featured. The plantation employs thousands of Haitian workers in what amounts to indentured servitude or to be less tactful, slavery. Each worker is paid $2.00 a day for cutting 1000 pounds (a day) of sugar cane. They buy supplies at the company store where the prices are higher than in the neighbouring town and they are not permitted to grow vegetables to supplement their bought food supplies. It is difficult for them go to a town because their papers/documents are in the hands of the plantation overseers and there is prejudice and racism in the Dominican Republic against Haitians. There is no school for the children, there is no medical clinic. The film was made by Brian McKenna, who is a respected journalist here in Canada and I have little reason to believe that what was portrayed is not true.
I think it is important that people know where their money is going and whom it is supporting. Your vacation dollars are basically complicit with modern-day slavery in the Americas. I doubt that was your intention.

I watched the last 2 episodes of " Big Sugar " ..... Absolutely unbelievable , I had no idea . I am starting to do my thing by buying only fair trade sugar . Plus , would never darken the doorway of Casa Romano . Horrible , horrible , horrible .
