Jumby Bay, Ladera, Caneel?

Has anyone been to the newly renovated Jumby Bay? My travel agent is highly recommending it and it gets rave reviews on trip advisor. I'm turning 50 in January and trying to decide where I want to wake up on the big day. We are mainly interested in beautiful beach, excellent food/wine/service, scenery and maybe snorkeling. Don't care about night life or shopping, in fact, would prefer to avoid shopping. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you have been to either Jumby Bay, Ladera or Caneel Bay. Thanks! Nancy

If snorkeling is high on your list of priorities than it's really no contest - go to Caneel Bay. Jumby Bay gets the nod for the better landscaped property but the beach there is just average. Caneel Bay offers you the best beaches (7 different light golden sand ones to choose from). Ladera's beach is just OK but the island itself is quite lush.

Caneel Bay is in a National Park, so anywhere on the property you see only landscapes, seascapes, sky, other islands, NO development. Caneel has its rooms scattered about 170 acres, and 7 tree-shaded white sand beaches, all with wade-in snorkeling. If there are negative reviews to be read about Caneel, they seem to be mostly from people who didn't do their homework beforehand. Some people believe that big bucks means massive lobbies, marble baths, big flat screen TVs, etc. Caneel is upscale, but in a very "Caribbean Casual" way.
The allure is that there is nothing like it for feeling that you were able to live in paradise on your big birthday.

Caneel has wonderful snorkeling, love the beaches, stayed on
Scott beach twice and cottage 7 twice. Yes the property
is beautiful and you will have a good time. We dined in
cruz Bay, and at the hotel. I never liked the large
dining pavillion--I prefer a more intimate setting, I would have a breakfast hamper sent to the room. Lunch at the Beach bar, can be busy with day trippers, but I enjoy the upstairs seating-- Never liked The Equator restaurant,no view,
but enjoyed Turtle Bay, for breakfast and dinner. Having
stayed on Anguilla many times I missed the local beach
front restaurants. Caneel has wonderful walking paths,
donkeys and lovely scenery. A jitty bus will take you
around the property. Yes it is a stunning property.
I must admit I sdo miss the snorkeling--saw lots of turtles.

The new Jumby is stunning--the best new rooms in the carribean. We love the new rooms and did not feel the old rooms had to be done over. We have been there many many times and quite frankly we were concerned how the "new" jumby would feel.
We just went this past winter. Jumby has a very nice beach-
I have to say its one of our favorites---its more than just
average--I can say that as we go to Anguilla 3 times a year-
land of the best beaches-- Jumbys beach is calm and relaxing. No cars, love the walking and biking
paths. The service has always been outstanding, and many
of the old staff is back. The lovely Estate house has
an old world feeling--dining under the stars is magical.
The beach veranda setting cannot be beat for casual dining-
and the new Pond house grill, new infinity pool and stunning
view is wonderful. I am not a fan of all inclusives--but
the food is outstanding, wine, etc. The best part is you
can leave your wallet locked in the safe the whole trip.
I would add Jumby is like a very private county club. If you
go to their website it really represents what you will get-
there is a great review in WSJ --I think its on their website.

I am a beach, dining experience person. Thats how we ended
up in Anguilla, and also going to St. John----but there
is something very special about Jumby----their outdoor
rain shower is fantastic. So only you know whats important
to you. If you do a search I have written about Jumby
and caneel on this forum in the past.

Oh--we dined at Ladera years ago. St. Lucia is very
tropical and lush. I honestly thought Ladera was like
a big tree house. I am glad we went to St.Lucia, but I
prefer Caneel and Jumby.

Hope this helped, please feel free to ask other questions-
honestly there is no bad choice---

Thank you all for the replies...sounds like either would be wonderful. Now to check air fare and convenience of getting to either, flying from Atlanta. I think I'm leaning toward Caneel, mainly for the beaches and snorkeling. Although, my husband loves the idea of locking up his wallet in the safe and leaving it there. As far as cost, do you think Caneel would end up being more expensive because of the meals? Is there anywhere to eat away from the resort, and if so, is it safe? We do like to eat (and drink) well when we travel! Also, does Caneel get a lot of day trippers from the cruises?
