Jumby Bay

We have just booked our honeymoon for the first part of May and were wondering if the mosquitos at Jumby Bay will in any way spoil our trip. We have heard varying reports. We have been to other Caribbean islands and never had a problem with mosquitos. Is this resort as lovely as it appears? Does it feel oceanside even tho the rooms are back a bit from the beach?

Are you talking about Jumby Bay on St John?

Jumby Bay is an excellent honeymoon choice IMO.
We were there last year the same time you're looking at (and we're headed back again in May this year).
I can't recall a single mosquito bite, though I'm one of those who seems to get bitten less often than average (I seem to get tormented mercilessly, however, on St. John). There's bug spray available in the rooms (free) but I didn't have to use it.
One reason mosquitos may be less bothersome on average on Jumby Bay Island (actually called Long Island) is that it's a very arid island. It gets quite a bit less rain than Antigua which is only 2 miles west.
Most of the rooms have views of the water, but none of them are within 100 yards (except the villas).
I think that I didn't mind the lack of actual beachfront room location because the resort feels so private and uncrowded. It feels like you're sharing the island with a handful of other people, unlike a large resort in Hawaii where you may have to go out early in the day to stake out a chaise lounge or beach umbrella. Not so at JB. You can wander down to the beach anytime and have a choice of lounge/umbrella facilities to yourself. (I don't know if this is true in high season, though).

As for beauty, be prepared for the arid appearance. It's difficult to grow expanses of grass on Jumby Island, so it looks nothing like a golf resort.
The rooms and main house have a strong traditional British island influence. A nice change from many of the ultra casual resorts elsewhere in the Caribbean.
JB's biggest asset is the privacy aspect. It's a very well maintained island. Extremely safe, very low density of people. Lots of low key charm. And Rosewood has done a nice job so far since taking over management of the resort.

Jumby will be wonderful for a relaxing low key honeymoon! We just got back from Jumby, our 3rd January -- 9th trip to the resort. It just gets better and better! As far as mosquitos, this January was not a problem. I would anticipate the same in May. Last November they were bad in the evening, outside on our patio. The fall had lots of rain, lots of water -small ponds. We even joked about Jumby lake-now dry. They do spray the resort. I usually check the closet, outdoor overhangs, etc. I spray with Bop (available in the room, plus off). Never had a problem at breakfast, dinner etc. Relax, you will enjoy.
Some of the courtyard suites, and Pond House rooms are less than 100 yards, the view of the beach, palm trees is lovely. The feeling you get from the room is wonderful. The newly updated Rondavels, will have some views, but not like the rooms above. We did not miss the direct beachfront location we had at Caneel, and CJ, even the new Carlisle.
The all upscale inclusive is amazing. Upmarket, excellent service, no signing,
nice selection of food. Travleis, its better than last May. Now at lunch they added more items on the standing menu,of course the cold buffet, plus a pasta bar. House wine is good too. The chef changed since last May,
he has done at outstanding job. Subtle changes! We never got bored with the wonderful estate house, although the lower veranda is now open for a casual evening meal. Same wonderful staff!
As for the beauty of the island, its now a bit more lush. Lots of new plantings. Paul the resident horticulturist is wonderful. Some of the plantings get destroyed by the wandering herd of ship-akin to the deer
problem in the US. Make sure you bike around the island, lots of beautiful homes, gardens. Every time we go I notice new plantings!
You will have a wonderful honeymoon! Enjoy!
