Jalousie vs. TiKaye village

Think we have picked the beautiful island of St.Lucia to celebrate our 30th...now it's down to the hotel...Jalousie is just a bit over our price range, but are considering it for the beautiful location...but have also read so many positive reviews from Ti Kaye village, a bit more affordable, if anyone has been to both or seen both, would love your opinion on which you would recommend , we like small, intimate , good personalized service, off the beaten path kind of places..thanks...

Ti Kaye is definitely more off the beaten path and a boutique resort, though Jalousie is hardly in a crowded area. If Jalousie definitely appeals to you more, check out the handsome package rates offered on www.luxurylink.com for that resort. You might be surprised to find it's in yourprice range.

Check out Stonefield too. We stayed there and loved it. It's next door to Jalousie, and you can use Jalousie's beach anytime-a free shuttle will take you there. Stonefield gets much better sunset views as the Piton is not in the way. It's also less expensive and you have your own private villa, but it's still part of the resort. Let me know if you want to see pictures.

I have read a few comments re. the rooms being a bit shabby at Joalousie plantation,,,and would be concerned about the readers who wrote that Stonefield Estates does not have air conditioning...any info re. this would be appreciated, like the idea of staying in the southern part of StLucia near all the natural attractions...if TiKaye was more south I would have chosen,,not sure how far it is from the scenic areas in Soufriere.
When I plan a trip I take all the things I read , make a decision based on my overall gut feeling, realize there is no perfection ,there will always be pros and cons, but would like to make this a really great 30th celebration vacation,
thanks

Well, it's been several years since I stayed at Jalousie--it was 2001. Our villa wasn't shabby at all, but that could have changed since then. Ours was one of the larger villas with a separate sitting area with TV and sleeper sofa. The bathroom in particular was spacious and nicely appointed.

You could, of course, request to be put in a room that has been recently renovated.

Ti Kaye is, at most, a half hour ride from Soufriere.

dominick, are you quite sure? i've not driven it myself but juding from the distance on the map and remembering the roads, I'd expect it to be 45 minutes, especially for a non-local driver.

ejcrowe -

The road down the west coast of the island has been completely redone in the last few years and, as a result, the ride takes less time than it used to. However, someone who has never done the drive before might drive a little more slowly because of the twists and turns (and the temptation to stop and take pictures!) and, therefore, take a little longer. So, bottom line, my estimate might be somewhat optimistic.

ahhh, that does explain it then. Of course one should never underestimate the time taken out for photographs along the road, as you rightly say!

I would not stay at TiKaye. I took a boat to their beach to snorkel and in addition to the over 100 steps you'll need to climb to go from beach to your room each day, the beach was SWAMPED with huge cattle boats bringing people to snorkel (anse coshon is a top snorkel spot with a reef off the beach and sunken boat further out).

I counted 4 large boats; our driver (we took a private boat) said often it's much more. I was so glad I didnt stay there. If you want to visit to snorkel, go early before lunchtime.

We did stay at Ti Kaye three years ago, and it was good. The cattle call boats don't stay long and the people stayed on the boats and in the water, and didn't come on shore. There is a reason the cruise boats take passengers there to snorkel -- the snorkeling is great. Therefore, for the vast majority of the time, as a guest there you have great snorkeling almost to yourself. Local fishermen do come in small boats in the mornings to catch fish with nets, but they don't bother you and are kind of fun to watch.

You feel secluded and romantic in the villas, the views are great, and the outdoor showers are a lot of fun. It's a romantic, couples atmosphere with no children. It IS a lot of steps to the beach, but not that bad, and is the reason for the wonderful views from your villa.

Lots of reviews on tripadvisor.

Good luck!
