Hi, my wife and I(both in our late 30's) are thinking of staying at the Jalousie in July. Has anyone stayed at this resort and if so, what did you think? We are trying to decide whether to bring our 14yr old son with us but we are afraid he may be bored there. Any feeback would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

Hi There!!
We just returned from St. Lucia and as a result of all the huss and fuss we heard about the Jalousie we had to spend some of our island tour checking it out.
So here is my limited impression. Sexy, romantic intimate and very quiet. It is at the base of both the Pitons and is truly nestled at the base, there is a shuttle to get people around the property. Clearly it is a very luxurious resort with all the amenities. However, there were no children that I could see. And the pool was just a pool, and the beach was lovely but clearly geared towards couples with all kinds of intimate loungers for two. There also appeared to be no watersports in high swing, everyone was very relaxed and it was truly quiet. But fantastic location, again however, not for children.
If you are looking for luxury and still St.Lucia (which is a wonderful island please don't let others tell you differently) try a high end resort in Rodney Bay on Reduit Beach. It is a long and lovely beach with much to do and many resorts on it. I saw some children there playing in the water, but clearly they were able to amuse themselves.... Goodluck and have a ball!! There is the Beaches property in Negril Jamaica that is geared toward high end with children... But if you go to Jalousie (and I would melt with envy) no 14year old. OH and by the way - the Jalousie was featured on a t.v show here in Canada called the Greatest Spa's and it certainly looked to suit the bill... The rooms have private plunge pools and views of the Pitons and the Ocean - however, they are almost impossible to be seen from the beach or other public spots....
You may want to try Priceline when booking your hotel. The Jalouise Hilton came up on a recent bid at $100 per night. That's gotta be a deal. If you are not familiar with Priceline, check out www.biddingfortravel.com It's a wonderful web site that gives info & instruction on how to be a smart Priceline bidder. Plus winning bidders post their winning bids, so you'll know what a competitive, reasonable bid would be. You can even Email Sheryl, the site Administrator, with your trip details, and she'll give you advice on how/what to bid. Have a great time. We honeymooned in St. Lucia in '96 and LOVED it. Hope we'll be able to go back someday!
If you didn't already find out - Hilton Jalousie is discounting 50% of all their rates from now until December 20, 2003.
I just found out about this on the Hilton website.
Good luck! We're definitely going to Jalousie now.
I stayed at the Jalousie with my partner two years ago and thought it was the most beautiful and idyllic setting we'd ever seen. The beach is lovely (albeit covered with imported sand to make it look so white), the pool area very relaxing, the villa suites with plunge pools very romantic.
Whether it's for your 14 year old depends on your son's interests. The Jalousie offers a pretty good range of sports if he likes snorkeling or diving, tennis, or hiking. There's even a pitch and putt golf course and a workout room in the spa area. If he likes sports, or being a beach bum, and can entertain himself, by all means go for it. If he likes to have youg people his age around, then he might find Jalousie a little tiresome.
On our return to the airport after a week's stay, we were queuing for the helicopter with two families. One was a family of three from Russia with a teenage boy who were bitterly disppointed not only with Jalousie but with St. Lucia, too. They had wanted tons of action and nightlife and complained loudly the entire time--after all, they had traversed half the world to get there. (They shouold've researched their trip better or gotten a better travel agent.)
The other family was American with a teenage girl who couldn't say enough good things about their visit. The girl was able to go back and forth between the beach and the spa all day long--check in with her parents from time to time, and then do her own thing.
So it all depends on your son's interests and ability to be his own entertainment. I personally think the Jalousie is fabulous (food notwithstanding) and would love to return to St. Lucia.
