ISO best Caribbean vacay spot for mom & son
ISO best Caribbean vacation island and place to stay for mom and 12 year son who love to swim and snorkel off the beach!!! A place where snorkeling is awesome!!
We like to snorkel, dive, and would like to try some other water sports if possible! Horseback riding, other outdoor activities, and just beaching it! A place with decent shopping would be great for Mom
. Prefer a quieter place without tons of nightlife or crowds of people. A hotel or resort (just not too too expensive) would be best.

What is your budget in terms of dollars? The term "not too expensive" is meaningless without a point of reference.
Also, when are you planning to travel, where are you traveling from and how long a trip? The answers will have a big impact on cost.
For very good snorkeling and diving look at resorts in the US and British Virgin Islands. If you want shopping, St. Thomas would be a good base of operations.

St Johns would be best for snorkeling directly off the beach. Caneel bay resort is excellent but expensive. You could also stay at the westin but then you would have to cab it to the various beaches for good snorkeling. The issue/beauty of ST Johns is that there are no major resorts on the main beaches besides Caneel which I mentioned earlier.
There is snorkeling off the beach on Virgin Gorda (difficult to get to and no resorts/shopping on those beaches) as well as Grand Cayman (governors beach which is part of 7 mile beach). You could stay at the Westin on Cayman and take a 5 min cab ride to gov harbor beach for snorkeling. Cayman also offers a turtle farm, dolphin discovery, some lovely gardens and excellent shopping.
The Marriott Frenchman Morningstar resort on St Thomas is also nice and may have some snorkeling but lately its been getting mixed reviews. We stayed several years ago for one night in their beachfront room (while in transit to St John) and thought they were good value because they were steps from the gorgeous beach but those rooms are now getting negative reviews because they are dated.

Sorry forgot to mention, Provo on Turks and Caicos. There is a decent reef right off the main beach near Coral Gardens on Grace bay. Sands resort on Turks is family friendly and mid priced (for Turks).

There are two snorkeling off the beach areas that you can walk to if you stay at WINDSONG, WEST BAY CLUB, or THE GANSEVOORT in Providenciales: Coral Gardens and Smith's Reef.
T&C is one of the more expensive islands, but the beach and water sports are phenomenal. And it doesn't hurt that the flight is only 3 hours non-stop from New York, sometimes a bit less!

Thanks everyone! We are flying from CT and plan to go mid-April.
We've been to St.John and loved it. While the snorkeling was good, I'd like to find better.
I'm thinking of T&C, Grand Turk, Bahamas, and Roatan. I want to make sure the weather is hot! Also we'd prefer a more remote, quieter place. I'm open to ideas...
I think a smaller resort would be great, ideally with a restaurant attached. And within walking distance to the beach (snorkeling/diving) and small shops. Biking around the island would be great, horseback riding, hiking...
