Info on Grand Cayman

We've been to lots of islands, but never the Caymans. We're looking at them for next March's spring break with our 10-year-old. We perfer nice beaches, some good snorkeling, and an enviroment where we feel safe when we go into town. My husband has gobs on Marriott points and we understand that the Marriott there is about to reopen after extensive renovations. Our ideal day is one where we go from our PJs to our bathing suits to our PJs. Is the 7 mile beach the place for us? Are there activities on the beach for our daughter (i.e. banana boat rides, jet skis, etc). Any info/help will be appreciated. We need to book soon.

I think you will be happy based on your original post. 7 MIle Beach is awesome, the snorkeling is fantastic, and GC is very safe. The Marriot's beach is a bit skinny, but you'll be just fine.

Yes, 7MB is the perfect place for your family. Grand Cayman is a very safe island, "British conservative," and you'll find plenty of beach/water activities both on 7MB on in Georgetown.

Also don't miss a day in Rum Point!

Your family will love Grand Cayman. We went to the Turks and Caicos Islands this year, and we all preferred Grand Cayman.

We love Grand Cayman for all of the reasons mentioned above. The Marriott is supposed to have gained a nice stretch of beach now as a result of Hurricane Ivan. I was thinking of using our Marriott points, too.

I would have to agree w/everyone else who has posted. Grand Cayman is an awesome little island, very safe, 7 mile is a great beach. Our family went for Thanksgiving, stayed at a condo right on the beach and just relaxed and took it easy.

You have to do the touristy thing and snorkel at shark rey alley, very cool and your 10 year old will freak out at first and then love it. The water is amazing in Cayman.

Take the drive to Rum Point, nice place to spend the day, have dinner or lunch at the Lighthouse on the way there.

Enjoy! One of our favorite places.

I would check your dates with Marriott. I was looking at using Marriott pts for GC next spring break and they were not offering their standard room reward. They were only offering the reward that requires one and a half times the points. So Good luck I hope your dates work. We are going to Hawaii instead.

Cookbound~~Were you in Cayman this past Thanksgiving after Ivan? What condo did you stay in? We're going to Mexico this year, but I already miss GC!

Hi summer04,

No we were in Cancun this past Thanksgiving, it was Cayman Thanksgiving03, before Ivan. I haven't returned since then so not sure how the island is now. It will be Playa de Carmen this year for Thanksgiving05, but plan on returning sometime soon to GC.

We stayed at the Casa Caribe condos, right on 7 mile beach, they were perfect for our family (my sister, her hubby, my hubby and our dad) 3 bedrooms 2 baths had everything we needed, great patio. You have to book early as they get booked up quickly (of course this is preIvan). Very close to town, very convenient but we rented an suv to check out the island so not an issue for us.

Take care!

Cookbound~~I know where Casa Caribe is and would've loved to stay there, but we only have 1 daughter. We've been at the Hyatt, the Westin, and Aqua Bay Condos. I must miss GC more than I thought! Every time I read posts on it, I get "homesick" for it!

Anyway....Interesting that you are going to Playa del Carmen this Thanksgiving. We're going to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Akumal this summer! Have you been there before? We used to go to Acapulco and Cancun in the 70's and 80's, but haven't in recent years. This is the first time to PDC and Akumal. Got tons of advice on Locogringo and can't wait to go. Where will you be staying in PDC? We're going to try the Riu Palace-first time at an AI. Hope you see this!

Summer

Definately dive at Stingray City although a recommendation is to do a 2 tank north wall dive with a stopover at Stingray City (you can breath off your left over air from the previous dive). Snorkeling with them is fun but diving with them is unbelievable. Just make sure you have video! It's a blast.
