Well, I live here.....what type of atmosphere are you looking for, and what price range? I'll be glad to make recommendations, but we have a bit of "deluxe", as well as "run of the mill and not too pricey."
Statia,
I am looking for nice accomodations with a/c. I am coming with my wife and 20 year old son and 18 year old daughter. Looking for place convenient to town and restaurants so can walk in evening. Also can you recommend a guide for hiking the Quill.
Thanks
Well, the nicest hotel on the island is The Old Gin House. They have a website where you can look up prices and see their rooms. I also highly recommend dinner there, although it can be expensive. They are located on the water in lower town, and it's a relatively easy walk up the slave path to go into upper town from there.
The other two options for rooms with A/C would be King's Well and Golden Era. You can probably view both of these hotels on the Statia Tourism website. I believe that the link is http://www.statiatourism.com . These two hotels are nothing fancy, but are an affordable alternative to The Old Gin House, if it is out of your price range. Both of these hotels are also located where it is an easy walk into town.
There are not too many guides for the Quill as it is easy to hike on your own. My suggestion for selecting a guide would be to visit the tourist office upon arrival (located in Fort Oranje). There is one guide in particular who knows the Quill inside and out, and I've used him, but he can talk your ear off at times. His name is Charlie Lopes, so you can easily ask the tourist office about hiring him, as well, if that interests you. He's quite knowledgable.
Feel free to ask away if you have any further questions. I hope you enjoy your stay here.
