We stayed at Embassy Suites in Isla Verde it was close to the airport & Cruise port. We took a taxi for about $15 dollars each way. The Hotel is amazingly beautiful, I could have stayed there for a week. Georgeous pool and only 1 block from the beach.
I would add the following to RoamsAround's list:
Ritz Carlton (in Isla Verde)
Renaissance (in Condado)
For the day before your cruise - what time do you arrive in San Juan? If you will have some time to explore or have a nice dinner, I would suggest staying in Old San Juan.
Before embarkation, I'd strongly recommend the Sheraton Old San Juan if you can get a decent rate. It's directly across the street from the cruise port, so it's a particularly convenient location.
After the cruise, I'd look at one of the hotels in Condado or Isla Verde.
The Courtyard Isla Verde is nice but can be a bit loud and busy on weekends. It also draws a lot of families, but it's a nice hotel.
The Conrad is a nice hotel, but the beach there is rather small.
There's nothing wrong with the Marriott in Condado.
Thanks for the suggestions. We're getting into San Juan about 7:30 Fri nite. Need to be at cruise dock around 4:00 on Sat., so Fri. nite needs just to be convenient to air and port to crash. Hope to be able to do something on Sat. though.
San Juan isn't that big, so while you may have some traffic, it's still pretty easy to get to Old San Juan from the airport. It's usually about 20 minutes to Old San Juan from the airport, though that can easily stretch to 40 minutes because of traffic. That's why I'd avoid Condado on the night before the cruise. If you don't want to stay in Old San Juan near the port, then stay in Isla Verde, which is much closer to the airport. Either works, but there a lot of great restaurants that are easily walkable from the Sheraton (albeit up hill, so if that is a factor, keep it in mind). Isla Verde isn't so walkable, but most hotels have at least one good restaurant.
And Puerto Ricans eat late. In fact, I'd recommend making a dinner reservation in whatever are of the city you plan to stay in about a week or two ahead of time. You'll still probably have to wait for a table, but it does help to have a reservation.
