Looking for feedback from anyone who has been to Club Med's Columbus Isle on the island of San Salvador. We are looking for a "non-touristy" island with great beaches and diving. Also, an all-inclusive property appeals to us for the sake of not worrying about $$. Any other all-inclusive suggestions in the Carribean would be appreciated!

Have spent the last six years at Turks+ Caicos....its great beaches and diving...now getting a little built up and thats why we are trying out San Salvador for New Years
Becca; My wife and I dove with the Riding Rock Inn's dive op there several years ago. Not much "touristry" things to do there, but if you want to relax, rent a car and take snorkeling equipment with you, and tour the island. Great beaches in dozens of spots. Guaranteed: you'll be the only ones leaving footprints on it. Very desolate. All inclusives are nice, but you remained a prisoner to their dining schedule. However, in many nice places in the Bahamas, we simply asked the kitchen manager if we could have a picnic lunch...and they packed one for us. On San Sal, as the Bahamians call the island, my wife got sick from the diving, and couldn't eat much. I asked one kitchen lady at the Riding Rock Inn if I could have several slices of bread with jam for her. She said, "Nonsense!", and brought to our room a plate full of toast, tea, jellies of all sorts, plus bananas, mangoes, and other island fruits. She told my wife the fruits would go through her ok and make her "all better." She was right. You may want to hit the Riding Rock Inn's little bar. The diving is fantastic, and Club Med visits the same sights as Riding Rock. So, type in the laters website and view the dive sites. Club Med lacks the expert advise and marine biology knowledge which Riding Rock's dive masters have, but they have a beautiful dive boat, and underwater places to explore. I guess that's why many of us like the remote outer islands. On Club Med, you can have both worlds, with a rental car. Email me if you want details. Bob Morton
Message: Becca; I posted this Bahama questionairre which I found on the outer
island of Abaco. If your answer is "YES" to 90 percent of these statements, I'd suggest you would like "San Sal" as the Bahamian's name the island. Club Med will give you much excitement and entertainment, but it offers a laid back and unique experiences listed below, you simply have to say "No!" to the hype. Definately rent a car and tour this remote, isolated island. Buy some creations from the strawmarket ladies in the town(a 10 minute stroll sees it all) and eat at some local eateries(a handful at best) Here they are:
(1)I do not like a wild evening on the town
(2)I do not like a wide choice of cuisine.
(3) A casino is not important to me
(4) My kids don't need to watch TV.
(5) I don't have to be entertained by professional performers.
(6)I don't look forward to shopping in fancy department stores.
(7) I don't need a hotel with a "Kid's Club" or babysitting.
(8)I don't expect a lifeguard at the beach.
(9)I don't need to keep in close contact with the office.
(10) I don't expect room service and laundry to be done pronto possible.
(11) I don't get mad if I'm not waited on pronto possible.
(12) I don't need to visit the local museums and parks
(13) I am not looking forward to learning limbo dancing.
(14)I like reading a book in the sun for hours under a palm tree in a desolate
beach.
(15)I enjoy boating or fishing.
(16)I can smile and say "hello" to total strangers I pass on the street.
(17) I consider baracuda friends and not enemies when they curiously follow
me when I snorkel.
(18) I, and my family, can entertain themselves.
(19) I don't mind sand in my shoes.
(20)I think 'Happy Hour' is watching the sunset.
(21) I am elated I can't find a copy of "USA Today" or the "WSJ" anywhere,
and that my cellular phone accidentally(on purpose) fell into the sea.
(22) I like to rent a Boston Whaler and tour the cays by myself.
(23) I dig it when the fastest way to town is in a rented golf cart or on a
bicycle, or maybe a motor scooter.
(24) I'm not afraid of land crabs when hiking.
(25) I love the out-of-doors and enjoy seeing wildlife in the wild, not in
aquariums or bird exhibits, or zoos.
(26) I like places where the tour of "Downtown" takes only 20 minutes on
foot.
(27)I love snorkeling, scuba diving or swimming in the salty sea.
(28) I don't get upset when the salty sea makes my hair like a brillo pad, for
fear I won't look good at the fancy restaurant I plan to dine at tonight.
(29) I'll take a Kahlik Beer over a Manhattan or Martini any day.
(30) I can handle the flight home leaving an hour or more late due to
sudden bad weather, or, because the pilot and crew of one or two can't make
it on time to the airport.
(31) I don't mind seeing pigs or chickens scavaging on the lawn of
government buildings.
(32) I think it's fun and exciting when the power goes out for the third time in
two hours.
(33) Believe the highlight of the day is finding something neat on the beach.
(34) When I get back to the states from the outer, remote islands, I learn
some lessons I wish the U.S. culture would adopt.
(35) I enjoy the out islands so much, that I would risk a Bahamas Air flight to
one of them, knowing I'm the last plane out before the out-island flights are
cancelled due to an approaching hurricane.
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions on any of the 34 items. I
will give you specific examples of them...they all happened to me. I love the
OUTER ISLANDS! Robert
