I can tell you there will be PLENTY of places open in the Caribbean in October..keep looking around.

You're right to be concerned about October in the Caribbean, due to risk of hurricanes. Last year we had to postpone our trip to the Bahamas due to a hurricane although that is the first time we've ever done that (& the Bahamas are not in the Carribean).

The ABC islands are less likely to be hit, same with Barbados and Tobago but all islands can be affected by a hurricane even if not hit. For something as important as a honeymoon, I'd look to Hawaii.

First, you do realize that when flying to the Caribbean from Key west you'll first have to make your way back to MIA where you'll have to connect with a flight to one of the "major" island. Then, if you choose a smaller island you'll need either a second flight or ferry to reach your intended destination.

Now, as you are already finding out many Caribbean resorts and hotels will be closed in October as will some of the restaurants and activities/points of interest. However, as Dukey1 points out you should be able to find enough resorts that are open on any island. Since the number of "closures" on any given island can vary from year to year you'll just have to make some inquiries to determine if a particular resort/hotel will be open during the particular week or so you are planning to travel. The good news is that: 1) Once you identify the island you want to visit, you should be able to find several resorts that are open, 2) You'll be paying some of the lowest room rates of the year, 3) You will not encounter any crowds as most islands will have very few tourists at that time of year so you'll have the beaches pretty much all to yourself.

You have to also understand that October is peak hurricane season in the Caribbean and that's the main reason many resorts are closed. There tends to be a little more rain during that time of the year however, if a major storm is not affecting the particular island you are visiting the rain is often in the form of fast moving brief showers. Now, the odds of a hurricane striking a given island during a single week in October are actually pretty small but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. You'd be wise to purchase Trip Interruption Insurance if you travel at this time of year - make sure you understand the terms of the policy and what happens if you have to cancel your trip because of a storm as policy terms vary from company to company.

The further south you go the less chance there is you'll encounter stormy weather in October. Look closely at Barbados and St. Lucia as those are traditionally at low risk for storms.

Anguilla is going to be very "quiet" in October so you might want to save that destination for another time.

The risk of hurricanes is precisely why my husband and I are looking at Aruba for our anniversary in mid-October.

Roams Around is right on. At that time of year , if you prefer to travel to the Caribbean research St. Lucia, lush tropical green paradise and Barbados beautiful blue and white sandy beaches.

St Lucia was affected by a hurricane in Nov 2010 which killed 14. I know people say that rain in the Caribbean is short sharp showers, but in my experience rain can linger for couple days. Travel insurance is fine, but if it is affecting your honeymoon personally I would not chance it. If there is no storm then it can be a fantastic time to visit, glorious weather & uncrowded.

I have to agree. When we went to St. Lucia in a November it rained for most of the week we were there. I've read several reports over the last few years of Aruba getting Tropical storms in October, November and December. It just all depends if there is a hurricane in the area as some of the Islands get Tropcial storms off of the hurricanes.

We tend to go to Mexico the first week of December and never had any issues with weather except in the United States coming and/or going with snow, which delays the airlines significantly.

We are looking at Puerto Rico in November this year. We can only hope and pay for the trip insurance.
