Hiring a driver for island tour?

I am planning a trip to Barbardos on May 11 and am interested in hiring a cab driver for an all day island tour. My husband and I have done this in Jamaica and it worked out well.

I am staying at the Crane and they told me drivers charge $60/hour. I thought I may get a better deal if I do a whole day.

Does anyone have anyone they would recommend? Do you know the average cost for a trip like this?

Thanks so much for your help.

I definitely do have a wonderful driver to recommend. We found him when we spent the day on Barbados and will definitely use him when we return to the island for 2 weeks later this year.

He goes by Big Daddy. I will get his business card with the e-mail and phone number, and you can check with him.

He took us all over the island, was personable and knowledgeable, and we all had a great time. His price for all day was very good - he will do much better than $60 per hour.

I'll track down his info today or tomorrow and post it here.

Hello,
I'm working on a series of documentaries warning people to be wise to Tourist Scams all over the world. We would like to feature a story in the Caribbean and I was wondering if any of you experienced travellers knew of any scams that go on regarding tours/accomodation or anything else? We want to focus on clever or elaborate scams.

DIANA - I see you also posted regarding credit card scams in Mexico. This is a s tory I'm really keen to feature if I can find out more about it. I would be very grateful if you could tell me more?

My telephone number is 0044 (0)1273 229 674 and my email address is:

I look forward to hearing all your stories!
Kate

Diana, you're returning for two weeks in Barbados later this year? Is this a new favorite island for you, or are you traveling with family again? Will you be able to get over to Grenada while you're there?

Hi ej,

We're leaving April 19 for 2 weeks in St Thomas (largely for Carnival),and then we do plan to check out Barbados this fall.

We've got friends on both Barbados and Tobago, and we'd like to use Barbados as a base to explore more of the Southern Caribbean.

We haven't been anywhere since last summer. You may remember both my husband and my Dad were very ill.

My husband is fine now, but my Dad's situation unexpectedly worsened, and he died March 5. Soooo, we are wanting to get away now that my DH has largely recovered.

Where are you off to next?

jillmar, Big Daddy's real name and e-mail are below. He is a gem!

[email protected]

Kate, I will e-mail you offline to answer any questions you may have...

Thanks so much, MIM. It has been a bad situation. It happened so fast we did not get much of a chance to say goodbye.

I appreciate your well wishes, and my "fodors family" was a big help to me last summer when I was so upset over all of the health issues loved ones were facing.

St Thomas is not the type of place we usually prefer, but I am ready for a party, and there is no better time to be had than Carnival in the Caribbean!

If Big Daddy does not work out, ask the hotel to recommend someone. A great island tour with others is offered by Island Safari. Private Safari offers private custom tours. You might find some more info for your trip here at www.destinationcaribbean.net.

Diana: Please accept my condolences as a result of your loss. I have always respected your contributions on Fodor's. On the same note, I am glad your husband has recovered and you are able to continue your travel passions as a pair. Life is so fragile. Best of luck and I look forward to your very informative contributions in the future.
