Hiking in St. John

My husband I are taking a cruise and want to spend the day in St. John hiking. There is not an excursion so I wondered if anyone had done this independently and who you used for transport.

Does your cruise actually stop in St. John or will you be docking in St. Thomas? If St. Thomas, you'll have to take one of the ferries to/from St. John. Go here for schedules:

Once on St. John you can hire one of the local taxi to drive you to the National Park hiking trails and then pick you up at a pre-determined time for the ride back to the ferry for your return to St. Thomas.

Go here for a list of hiking trails: http://www.vinow.com/stjohn/attracti...hiking-trails/

This is posted in Antiqua so think OP means St. John's Antiqua not VI. If so, wondering if OP found any hikes?

I did two hikes on Antigua: in the morning I took the public minibus from the bus station (next to the market) in St. John to English Harbour. From there I followed the Lookout Trail to Shirley Heights. Back in St. John I changed to a bus headed for Old Road and got off at the Mt.Obama trailhead (the driver should know the spot). It was a 45 min. hike following the dirt road to the summit (the one with lots of telecom masts on top).Initially flat, the road gets very steep in the middle section. There is a fence around the summit, but a hole in the fence at the back allows to enter the area for better views.

This question was posted in January. OP never came back to clarify whether they were stopping in Antigua (capital city St. John's) or St. Thomas and thinking of going over to the island of St. John (no "s"). Regardless OP's cruise has probably come and gone more than 6 months ago.
