Help with trip to Riviera Maya
Planning to Fly to Cancun on Sept. 8 and need help with choosing hotel in Riviera area. Never been to Mexico and we are early 50's, not party people, just want relaxation, some touring and beautiful beach. Is it better to do inclusive or not?
We will leave hotel and shop in Cancun area and visit ruins also. Will the weather be rainy constantly or just off and on during this week? Please help. I have read many, many comments and am leaning toward Secrets Capri Riviera Playa Del Carmen. Good Choice or is there a better one? What about the Fairmont and the new Gala Esmeralda? Any comments will be greatly appreciated.

The Riu Palace is amazing. Went there last year and everything was impeccable. It's all-inclusive, a beautiful resort, beautiful beach and very relaxing setting. Close to Playa del Carmen for shopping/visiting. There's also a little strip of shops, a mini-village of sorts, just outside the resort (a two-minute walk). Also very accessible to visit tourist sites and ancient ruins, such as Tulum and Chitchen Itza. They're a long drive away, but tour buses will come pick you up at the hotel.
Weather-wise, we were there at the same time as you and it was great. Very hot, and rained only during the night. But that's unpredictable.
For my money, all-inclusive is the way to go, especially in a place as high-quality as the Riu Palace. We were not disappointed.

We've been to the area twice, both times we did all inclusives and highly recommend it. Went on a girls trip (late 40s, early 50s girls) and also on a family trip with our kids.
I think you should shop in Playa Del Carmen first, before hassling with the trip to Cancun. It's pleasant to go to Playa Del Carmen in the evening, stroll the shops, and have dinner there. They had great lobster special dinners when we were there, and it was a nice change from the resort food.
Don't over schedule yourselves - the beaches and water are really nice.
