I am interested in vacationing in Trinidad for a few days soon, and would really appreciate any views/ideas on good, clean reasonably priced accommodations there. I would rather not stay at a hotel as I am sure that they would be way out of my budget, also I have heard that the main city Port-of-spain in a very unsafe place to stay, so if possible any other ideas of places that are not in there would be of great help.
Help with accommodations in Trinidad!!

There is a website that you can check for information on accommdations in Trinidad and Tobago, www.visittnt.com.
Other websites like tripadvisor and wheretostay also can give you options. If you search in the Trinidad part of this website(Fodors), I am sure that you will get some ideas.
I recommend this:
http://caribbeancoast.com/hotels/sandpiper/
publisher, Sandpiper seems to be in Tobago.
tsoi_sue, there's a small hotel in St. Augustine (about 10-15 minutes from airport) called Hosanna Hotel that may suit you.
POS is not as unsafe as you make it out to be. Crime is on the rise in Trinidad and you do need to exercise caution, but no more, I think, than I would in any North American city.
