Help Me Become Smarter (St Johns)

I'm at the most-confused moment of any potential vacation...I've booked the tickets & now I can't figure out the logistics. Can smarter people help me:

1. We're landing on St. Thomas & then taking ferry to St. Johns for two weeks. Is it cheaper to rent a car on ST & bring it over by ferry? (rather than picking it up in SJ)

2. we're thinking about visiting one or two islands in BVI. Do they use the pound as their currency? Does that mean that everything would be twice as expensive there (because of u.s. dollar weakness).

3. and, egads, where do we stay? Family of 4 (with a 9 and 11 year old)....in good shape & don't need a lot of entertainment. We're at Maho Bay camps for 5 nights...but how about the other week.....anywhere less rustic but doesn't cost a million dollars?

Now what can I give you folks in return? I have a terrific blueberry-infused-vodka recipe that I could send your ways.

I can answer some of your questions but first to help you "become smarter" you should know that the island you are planning to visit is St. John not St. Johns. FYI - St. Johns is the capital of Antigua - we wouldn't want you to end up in the wrong place.

Now for the answers:

1. Since you a staying on St. John you'll be better off renting you car there rather than St. Thomas. Some St. Thomas based rental companys won't allow you to take the cars on the ferry. The rental costs are about the same on either island so there won't be any savings.

2. The BVI's US$ as their currency. There's not much difference in prices between St. John and the BVI's - everything will probably be more expoensive than "back home" simply because everything has to be imported to the islands.

3) Not sure I understand your third question. Are you seeking information about where to stay for your second week in the BVI's or were you planning just day trips? If you are looking for accomodations in the BVI's you first have to decide which island (or islands) you want to visit. Tortola and Virgin Gorda are the two biggest and offer the most options for accomodations. The other islands are slightly more difficult to get to and some are quite small with not much to do but sit on the beach. Also, some of the smaller island resorts can be quite pricey. For starters why don't you check out accomodations on Tortola (look at places on Cane Garden Bay, near Road Town, Brewer's Bay or Long Bay). From Tortola you can easily take day trips to most of the other BVI's.

Hope this helps get you started.

Definately St. John.

And my point 3 was confusing! We're planning on staying on St John for the entire time (with maybe day trips) so I guess I was looking for other lodging ideas once we leave there.

(many thanks for the info).

If you're going to have a car, look into renting a villa. You don't say when you're going to be there, but in the off-season you can get a quite-nice villa for less than you'd pay at a hotel. Do a google search for "St. John villa". A very quick search just now found a house in the hills, with 2-bedrooms (one with bunk-beds) and a hot tub, for $1250/wk.

There are only 2 major "resorts" on St. John: Caneel Bay and the Westin. There are a few smaller boutique type inns and guest houses as well as lots of rental villas on the island. You can find a list of all the available accomodations on St. John here: www.stjohnisland.com

1. Rent your car on St John.
If you had a problem/break down it would be really inconvenient waiting for help to come from St. Thomas.

3. We stayed at Estate Lindholm and liked it. However, with kids I would rent a villa/condo where you could prepare meals.
