Hello Long Bay Hotel Fans

I am planning trip to Long Bay Hotel in Apr 2006. I have gotten a lot of info from tripadvisor and some from this site. Especially from you ejcrowe!! I know you think of it as a special place. It sounds like a drawback to another era. Can anybody give any other comments about it.

Hi, NYGirl. Your heading got me all excited, but I see that my enthusiasm for the place precedes me. You're right, I do love it and it is a throwback to another era, but it's not for everybody. There was a poster here going by Dreps who spent a vacation there in February 2005 and didn't care for it at all. I think his comments are on this forum someplace. You should read them to get a better balanced view of Long Bay. If you have any specific questions, I'd be glad to try to answer them.

I'll be staying there for the first time in two weeks for just one night. From everything I've read, it sounds like a good fit for us - except for the dress code for dinner. But what the heck, it's only one night and then we board Windjammer for two weeks of T-shirts and bare feet. I'll let you know how we like it.

Hey ejcrowe,
I did read something from someone that said he didn't like it but you can't please everyone all the time..... The main purpose of our trip is to do some snorkeling and really enjoy the island. I have been researching places to go for about three months now and we almost booked a hotel on Paradise Island and I told my Dad (He and his wife will be joining us) that I'd rather not show my kids (boy 16, girl 12) the Atlantis on their first trip to the Carribean. I want them to experience the real Carribean not some place that reminds them of Disneyland. I would like to avoid the commercialism and I thought the Long Bay would be perfect for that. The location is fantastic with the beach on one side and the bay on the other. My sister is also going with her fiance and his 11 year old daughter. So the girls will have each other to pal around with and my son will hang with the adults. I made sure everyone knew about the place not having tv, radio or telephones before we booked. I think it's going to be refreshing not to have all that interference with our island experience. Can you tell me now if you think I'll like it??
How about the dress code for dinner, we usually get dressed anyway to go out to eat - casual but neat. Is that about right??

NYGirl, I think you and your family will have a wonderful time at Long Bay. It's everything that the Atlantis is not--authentically Caribbean, intimate, a good value, and warm service. The location is hard to beat and so safe that the girls can wander about on their own from the bay side to the beach and back again without the adults having to worry. The beach should be back to fullness by April. I hope y'all have a wonderful time!

Thanks ej, I think the anticipation and talking about it is so much fun. Did you say dress code was casual but neat? Do guys have to wear jackets or anything??

NYGirl,
I emailed Chris at Long Bay to ask about the dress code. He said long pants and collared shirts for the men, however jeans and polo shirts are fine. No shorts for women either. Hope this helps.

Sorry, forgot to address your dress code question. Pam is right, no shorts for anybody after 6:00 in the main bar area. Not sure about the newer beach bar that they've just started opening in the evenings.

Though denim is allowed, who would rather wear heat-trapping denim instead of looser fitting khaki pants? Makes me cringe a bit to think of it.

And don't forget bug spray. Rooms are screened, so that's not a problem unless you leave your doors open. But if the wind calms down outside you need it.
