Is this a new hotel in Negril. I thought I read that the Riu Negril is different from the Riu Tropical Bay (which really isn't on the 7 mile stretch of beach in Negril, is this true?)

I couldn't find Riu Negril only Riu Tropical on Riu.com website, but a travel agency is listing these two names as different resorts.

Is anyone in the know?

Thank you for the information. Do you think they will be having grand opening specials like Riu Tropical had in 2001?

I can't even find any rates on this property.

We have booked a trip for 4 to Riu Negril in June. They were having specials when we booked, but I don't know if they are still offering them. Young children are free with parent so we only had to pay airfare for our 2 young children.

we just got back from riu negril (the new one) and was not happy. the lay out is bad--have to walk a long way for meals& pool. there is no coffee pot in the room nor is there an alarm clock. we only had maid service 2 days out of the 5 we were there. it is beautiful at the hotel but there is nothing to do except lay by the pool. the sand fleas are so bad on the beach that no one goes near it. you can tell the "new" people becuase they are all bit up with flea bites. just not happy--said they had a health club and casino--well the health club had no air conditioning and it was 2 treadmills a stair stepper and a few weights. it is 98 degrees every day!! the casino was a closet with 4 slot machines and a black jack machine. not even an employee stationed in the casino. you had to go to the gift shop to buy tokens for the slot machine. lots of topless europens and not many children. mainly couples enjoying the sun. i like more water sports/tours and like to people watch but at this place there was not much to watch. the shows at night are your basic a/i resort type. the bar staff and entertainment staff are wonderful but the front desk was not helpful at all. if you need assistance--ask the bartenders! they were willing to go out of their way to help. i am not a picky traveler but this was supposed to be a 5 star and it is not. maybe its just too new and they have to work things out more. lousy shopping in negril too. i thought shopping in cambodia was more modern than shopping in negril. good luck!!
