Hello,
I’ll list my questions directly:
1. How many kilometers is it from Havana to Cienfuegos?
2. Are the buses frequent from Havana to Cienfuegos?
3. How many hours is the bus ride from Havana to Cienfuegos?
4. How many kilometers is it from Havana to Trinidad?
5. Are the buses frequent from Havana to Trinidad?
6. How many hours is the bus ride from Havana to Trinidad?
7. How many kilometers is it from Cienfuegos to Trinidad?
8. Are the buses frequent from Cienfuegos to Trinidad?
9. How many hours is the bus ride from Cienfuegos to Trinidad?
10. Would I be allowing myself enough time if I based myself in Cienfuegos and made a one-day excursion out to Trinidad? Would I have enough time to see all the important sites in town?
11. How much time do you think I would need to see all the important sights in Cienfuegos?
12. Do Havana, Cienfuegos and Trinidad have ‘professional’ tourist offices where tourists are provided with proper maps (that list all the important sights)-kind of like the Tourist Infos in Europe-or am I better off relying on a tourist guide book purchased from home?
13. Is it true that Cienfuegos’ surroundings consist of some of the absolute best beaches in Cuba?

Oops! I forgot this one:
14. What do you generally think about Cienfuegos’ sightseeing? Do you find the town impressive compared to, let’s say, Trinidad?
For all bus schedules in Cuba, and their fares, chedk out Viazul Bus lines at.....

IMHO, one single day is not enough time to explore Trinidad, unless you like the "Once-over-lightly" approach to tourism. Trinidad was founded in 1514 by Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar and is both Cuba's (and the Caribbean's) Oldest City and is one of the best preserved cities in the Caribbean from the time when the sugar trade was the main industry in the region. Trinidad is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Personally, I think that using Trinidad as a base on the south coast would be a better option than Cienfuegos which is about 1 hour to the west of Trinidad.
There are great Map Boards publically posted throughout Trinidad to guide you around. A photo of one (including legend) is posted here.....

As to tourist guide books, well there are two that are good for Cuba. One is the Lonely Planet Guide and the other is Cuba, by Moon Publications. For a country with as much history and architectural sights as Cuba, you really won't maximize your experience unless you take a good guide book. Much depends what you're interested in.
For a straight lay in the sun beach vacation it's not as necessary.
Rough timing.(by bus, car is faster)
Havana to Cienfuegos = 4 hours
Havana to Trinidad = 5 hours

Oh, almost forgot. Here's a on-screen slideshow of about 7 minutes length of the photos I shot in Trinidad.
