Grocery Stores Near Sand Acres

When travelling with a 15 month old, we always need to find the local grocery store to stock up on the staples of his life ( pasta, and cookies ! ). Does anyone have any suggestions for a good grocery store to shop ? We are staying at Sand Acres. Thanks.

Hi Jenilynn - I guess you mean in Barbados?

We've stayed there years ago. There is a little convenience store within walking distance, but I'd get out to the main road and drive down to Rendezvous Road -- which is past the entrance to St. Lawrence Gap -- it's the first traffic light you will come to. Turn left there & it's a block up on the left -- The Big B -- it's great -- it's got everything you could ever need there (it's very well stocked, and large). Any other questions, please write back -- you can reach me directly at: [email protected]

Whoops, yes I did mean Barbados. Thanks very much for the information Lois. I have been reading your advice on the Barbados board, and it has been very helpful. We actually had a trip booked to Grand Cayman, but this GREAT deal came up for Barbados, and it was a direct flight from where we live in Halifax Nova Scotia. We will stock up on our son's staples at the Bib B, thanks to your advice. Cheers.

Jenilynn,

I just re-read my comment and my directions were slightly off -- When you drive down the main road and come to the traffic light at Rendezvous Road you will turn RIGHT and then the store is a bit past the first block on the left.

It's great you got such a good deal.

Thanks again Lois. We were lucky to get a deal, but are we going to like Sand Acres ? I don't consider myself or my husband to be overly picky. We have travelled extensively in the Caribbean, and have stayed at all types of resorts from very upscale to suites and condo accomodations. Bottom line, is we like a place on the beach, which is fairly close to restaurants, and has a laid back atmosphere.

Hi again,

Some of Sand Acres has been recently re-done (not sure if it all has). It's on a very pretty beach and the grounds are lovely. You can use things at their "sister resort" next door (Bougainvillea Beach). It's a fairly basic condo that's older but ok. The newer Bougainvillea Beach (5 yrs) has gorgeous accommodations of all types - were there "deals" available for it??

I' don't think their restaurant is that great, but it's ok for breakfast/lunch (although you can cook at Sand Acres). There used to be another ok restaurant down the street you can walk to from it.

However, you'd need a car to get to the Gap area where you will find several moderately priced nice restaurants. It's about 2 miles away, but not walkable. You will pass the entrance to The Gap on the left just before you get to the traffic light for the Big B.

As far as atmosphere, it's casual.

There's a great beach nearby that is perfect for anyone with small children. The beach the resort is on has lots of waves (not too calm).
The beach that is our favorite is Sandy Beach which is right at the beginning of St. Lawrence Gap. When you drive there go just past the entrance to the Gap and around the bend on the left you will find an entrance to a parking area (car park)- park there and walk out to the beach. It's very calm, crystal clear turquoise water and at times you can walk a football field out in the water and only be up to your knees. We love it.

Follow this link to see a picture of it:

(You will probably have to type this into your internet explorer to get to it).

Let me know what you think. Lois

Lois, you are a fountain of information. Yes, there was a deal for Bougainvillea, but they were sold out by the time we made up our minds to switch to Barbados.
As long as the condo at Sand Acres is clean, we won't care. We are there to enjoy the scenery, the heat, and watch our son play for the fist time in the Caribbean sea. I can't wait to go.

I know you will really enjoy your stay. It may be the first of many trips to a fabulous island. We started in 1986 (at Sand Acres) and our 17th trip is coming up this Oct/November. If you'd like a "tips" sheet I've put together that answers lots of questions people ask me, please write me directly at: [email protected] and I'd be glad to e-mail it to you.

Enjoy,

Lois

Our family of four just stayed in Feb. at the Bougainvillea Beach Resort. We loved it. On occassion our kids used the beach and pool at Sand Acres which was quieter. Sand Acres, although we weren't inside a unit looked fine to me and a good option because you have the use of both hotels's facilities. We used the little store a minute away for odds and ends and also went to the Big B for our main shopping trip. The Gap has a lot of restaurants I think you would feel comfortable taking your little one to. It's only a five minute drive. Driving a car can be hairy! Definitely go to the Wildlife Nature reserve up in the north. The animals roam around loose including the Green Monkeys who are free too come and go as they please. (You can sometimes see them down the road from the hotel, too). Any other questions feel free to ask. I'm still wishing I was there instead of in this cold and snow!

Thanks for your trip report. Sounds like you and your family had a great time. One question I had about the beaches for Sand Acres and Bougainvillea...are they attached, or does a wall seperate the two ? Also, how did you find the prices in the grocery stores ? Thanks for any info.

There's a rock outcropping between the two beaches with a short sidewalk above that gets you from one beach to the other. The two properties themselves are very easily accessed, one right next to the other. Grocery store prices were a little more expensive than what we would pay back here in Connecticut, but not much.

Remember to check out Sandy Beach with your little one -- much calmer water & shallow. Bougainvillea Beach/Sand Acres looks gorgeous but there are lots of waves there.

I know this is old but we recently have been offerd the Sandy Acres for one week through our timeshare. Has anyone been there recently? I would prefer Bougainvilliea. we are doing this one a trade from Aruba. We wanted to explore someplace different. Thanks.
