Grenada and Grenadines - October
Hello Fodorites-
My fiance and I are hoping to go to Grenada for our 10-day honeymoon in October. We picked Grenada for its lower profile, snorkling and hiking possibilities (we want to be active), decent year round weather and because it is below the hurricane belt.
I have two quick questions I'm hoping you can help me with.
1. We avoided Barbados because of the humidity. Grenada is lush so there will be some humidity but my research found that it is also windy which mitigates that. Is that true?
2. We would also like to hit some of the Grenadines as well - especially some of the smaller ones for the snorkling. Is there anyway to take cheap day trips to some of them? Like you could do to St. John's if you were in the Virgin Islands.
Thanks in advance-
Jim

You will find the humidity won't be too high in Grenada during October.
Grenada is a fair distance from the Grenadines. It's about 30 to 40 miles (about 1 1/2 hour by "fast boat" to Petit St. Vincent and Carriacou (the southermost Grenadines) from St. George's where you'll find most of the boating activity. You'd have to cross some "blue water" that can get rough at times. I don't recall there being any scheduled day trips so you'd have to charter a boat to make the trip. You're better taking one of the day snorkel trips that visit nearby cays.

From Grenada, you could take the fast ferry (Osprey) to Carriacou. The trip takes about 90 minutes and there can be rough water.
From Carriacou, you could arrange with Cuthbert Snagg to take you to the Tobago Cays (about 30-40 minutes away) in his fast boat for some amazing snorkelling. Or closer to Carriacou, he could take you to Sandy Island, White Island etc.
Unfortunately, you could not do all of this in one day but would have to at least overnight on Carriacou.
Fortunately, Paradise Inn on Paradise Beach has reopened under new management and is a super little spot (but rustic) on a perfect beach looking out to Sandy Island (and the hotel owners can just run you over in their boat or get a local).
Carriacou, by the way, is a 'dry' island - you won't have humidity problems.

IN addition to the high speed catamaran, you can take a puddle jumper from Grenada to Union Island in the Grenadines and then take a day-long snorkeling trip through the Grenadines, including the Tobago Cays. It's a lot to do in one day, but the price for airfare, departure tax, snorkel trip and lunch is around $200 per person if I remember correctly. I've been researching my own trip to Grenada and ran across this option. You can also do a multi-day sail in the Grenadines instead of a day trip from Grenada. You check ahead of time by doing a websearch or contact your hotel directly to see what they can arrange.
Congrats on your wedding! Where will you be staying?

Thanks for the options and thank you for the congratulations, EJ.
We have pretty much settled on Blue Horizons - mainly for the price and location. We aren't fish lovers so it is better if we can prepare some of our meals and we thought cottages would be more romantic than hotel rooms. Plus it is, according to what I've read, well located. We also looked at Secret Harbor but would rather not cab it every day. Allamanda would be nicer if you wanted beach access but I wasn't as impressed with their rooms. Also Blue Horizons has a really good rep on this board - especially of the owners.

I just want to add that Grenada is SO beautiful. I was stunned by it and have been to many places on this earth. The streets are littered with flowers and the locals, while keeping to themselves, are nice people if you engage them. A very nice port with a few good restaurants. We went to La Luna for dinner and it was great and very romantic. As for humidity....it's hot and humid as can be I'm afraid...my husband is a Meteorologist and you should be fine for weather there and at that time of year. Have a ball and bring mosquito spray!

Grenada is a wonderful choice for a honeymoon...or any time really! I have not stayed at Blue Horizons but have toured several times with people who did. Every one of them really enjoyed their accommodations - the only exception was the couple who did not understand that the property is not on the beach and did not appreciate the walk around the field to get there. Otherwise, they liked the property but would have chosen differently because the beach was that important to them. Enjoy your stay, it is a beautiful island.
