Grand Cayman with family - driving?

I'm traveling to Grand Cayman with my family at the end of May. We have 3 kids, ages 3,9, & 11. One of my friends told me that driving there is CRAZY & we shouldn't try it at all, frankly she tends toward the dramatic. The idea of hauling a car seat in/out of taxis, dealing with it at our stops makes me cringe.

Any experience?

not sure what could possibly cause your friend to make such a ridiculous statement.
we stayed 3 weeks. had car the whole time. it takes me approx 30 mins to adjust to driving to the "wrong" side.
another plus for the car is that (in addition to the car seat) you're going to want to take towels, toys, sunscreen, snacks, kindle, etc etc etc
your kids are going to love seven mile beach.
hope you plan to snorkel.
stingray city trip is a must.
drive out to rum point one morning. fun "burger" bar for lunch on the beach & real bar for the big people. fun colorful place that your kids will enjoy.

Your friend was probably intimidated by driving on unfamiliar roads - a trait that is not unusual for those who are not really comfortable driving no matter where they might be.

Driving on Grand Cayman is no different than driving around any small town. If you are from the US then the only thing you have to adjust to is "driving on the left" and, as the previous poster said, that takes only a short time.

There are only a few "main roads" on the island so it's difficult to get lost, speed limits are low (most people drive between 25 and 35 MPH), there are no highways and, compared to most cities, there's not a lot of traffic.

Honestly, if you or your spouse have no problems driving "back home" you will be just fine driving on Grand Cayman.

I was there for 2 weeks last summer and had a blast. The left hand driving does take a couple days to get the hang of, I turned down the wrong side of the road several times and round-abouts can be a little tricky. It's kinda like learning to drive again, you have to be really aware of what you are doing at all times.

Just came back from GC. We stayed 40 min outside of the main town. Driving is fine. Roundabouts take a bit of getting used to but really its not that scary at all. Its actually a lot easier driving on GC than other islands such as St John, Tortola etc which have curvy/windy roads.

thank you all! As I said, she tends toward the dramatic, so I do take what she says w/a grain of salt. I've heard the taxis are insanely expensive, and w/the added hassle of a carseat, it just seems like driving is worth the trouble. Plus, if we find it untenable, we can turn the car in and deal w/taxis.
