Good Eats in Barbados?
We're leaving in a week for Barbados and staying at Southern Palms near the GAP. I'm looking for recommendations for any good restaurants with typical island fare, not touristy but with plain old Barbadian cooking.

We are also on our way to Barbados this week and have been there many times. Here are some of our recommendations in your area. Don't miss the experience of the Friday Night Fish Fry at Oistins. It's very local, lots of little stalls set up grilling fresh catch of the day from the fishermen, live reggae music, very cheap and cheerful and probably the best typical Bajan food (and fun) you'll have on the island. Oceans Restaurant (in the Gap) is only a few years old, excellent fish, great view of the beach, medium price range. For a higher-end night try our favourite - The Restaurant at South Seas (in the Gap which is very romantic, medium-high price range, excellent food, located right on the sea, reservations a MUST. There is a cute little bar just south of you called The Gap Bar, where they cook typical Bajan fare (try flying fish sandwich & macaroni pie) and have very entertaining karaoke nights - it's full of locals. Have a GREAT time.

I'm so jealous! I love SPBC. It's my favorite place to stay in barbados. The beach is the best place to body surf!!
You will be within walking distance to tons of great restaurants. You just make a left out of the hotel and head up the street. You can eat a different place every night!
Have fun! Greenie

I definitely understand the desire to "Eat locally," but don't discount Barbados's many great continental restaurants... We found that in a week of meals--14 not counting breakfasts--three "Barbadian" fare meals were PLENTY. Of course, I'm southern, so macaroni pir and "rice and peas" weren't terribly new cuisines to me... Seriously, though, some of the better meals I've ever had (and I've traveled well, eaten well, both in fine dining establishments and local dives looking for good food) have been in Barbados...

I forgot another great "local" favourite of ours ... Just Grillin' is a very casual place for fresh grilled fish, burgers and chicken. It's in the parking lot of a little plaza, right across from the Accra Hotel (a short drive north of the Gap). It's picnic tables and cheap beers. Fabulous food - very popular with the locals and inexpensive.

Hey scbelle, thanks for the response. We are from the North and my husband is Latin so he is salivating at the thought of rice and peas and the like. I have not mastered this type of cooking. Do you care to share the names of any of those Barbadian dining establishments you have enjoyed? (the dives and the fine dining). Thanks.
