Hi:
My wife and I are booked to go to SVG via Barbados in early July for our 1st kidless trip in 15 yrs. I've read w/interest the many posts, yet still have a few questions - having never been there.
We have approx 10 days. I haven't yet booked local flights yet so I'm wondering if it makes sense to start in St Vincent (2 nights during Vincey Mas) then move down to Bequia and use that as our base to explore the smaller islands.
As well, I am having trouble visualizing Bequia. I had initially thought that we would stay at the Franji, but I'm scared off by the mosquito talk. If we stay elsewhere, is it too far to walk to the main commercial centre for meals and so forth?
Similar question for St Vincent - i want to go, and like being close to the city, but don't want to be kept awake at night by the carnival festivities. Any suggestions? I noticed that Liat has a late flight in (1/2 the price of SVGAir but will I have trouble making it to my hotel at that time of night?
Finally, the Friendship Rose sounds like a must-do, but what's the likelihood of finding a reasonable 2-3 night charter around the islands if we haven't booked in advance.
Thanks IA for any input
going to svg next month

My friends and I went to Bequia in April. The Frangi is nice. We went there most nights but did not stay there. We stayed around the corner at the Village Apartments. They were great. In St Vincent we stayed near the Vincy Mas area at the Cobblestone Inn, it was very nice and the restuarant was wonderful. It you want to get away from the crowds go to the Beachcombers,it is on the beach and it is nice. Eventhough I was seasick, I highly recommend the Friendship Rose. My friends loved it and the service is great.
Check out Bequia for a couple of nights, but it's not a good "base" for the Grenadines.
Try Palm Island or Canouan, from there you can explore all the Grenadine Cays-which are spectacular.
i agree with others that Bequia is a must-do island, but also that it would be expensive and time consuming if you make it your base of operations. However, with only 10 days you're not going to really have time to see everything without rushing and cosntantly packing & unpacking.
if you like the Frangipani and are afraid of mosquitos, simply request one of the two rooms with air conditioning. They're more expensive but they're stil an excellent value. I'm one of the posters who complained about mosquitos there last year. My husband had over 100 bites after our first night, and that was under the mosquito net! I would still stay at Frangipani again, despite the mosquitos, because I would take more precautions in the future. It's very conveniently located to town and the ferry and various restaurants and shops. But for a longer stay than a few nights I would probably stay closer to a beach.
You could check into the Pelangi, owned by the Frangipani folks, for an overnight sail. I have no idea what their rates are.
If you want to daytrip to the various Grenadines, Union Island is your best bet. it's pretty centrally located to Mayreau, Canouan, and the Tobago Cays. and you can fly to Mustique from there on SVG air. You can also daytrip to Mustique from BEquia on the Friendship Rose.
Last year we spent close to a full day on st. Vincent. we caught an early morning ferry from Bequia and spent about 8 hours on the island before flying to Grenada for the remainder of our trip. But you could conceivably stay on St. Vincent and just day trip to Bequia, or stay on Bequia and just day trip to st. Vincent.
